Agana was the obvious turkey but what did Andy Williams (£115,000) bring to the table? Dryden (£250,000) apart from the goal over the river, was pretty hopeless. Kevin Wilson (£275,000) was largely a disappointment and ended up playing at right back IIRC, the loanees didn't work out (Farina, McCllelland) whilst players like Mark Smith (£70,000), Dijkstra(£150,000) Bob Catlin(£75,000), Robbie Turner(undisclosed), Dave Robinson (£300,000) and Rideout barely made an appearance before moving on or retiring. Yes Rideout made us some money but the sale ruined the relationship between chairman and manager and he didn't contribute much to our chances of survival, results weren't great when he was in the team.
The only post Brighton-win Warnock signing from a fellow Football League club that might be described as a reasonable success was David Smith(£150,000), who I didn't rate that highly but many apparently did. His best signing of all during that period other than Devlin turned out to be Shaun Murphy but, one single league appearance aside, Murphy didn't make it into the first team until after Warnock had left.
None of the above can overshadow the incredible rise to the top, but if we can take it as read that Pavis would have gone for an experienced replacement, I think it would have almost certainly worked out better for us in the long run if Warnock had accepted the job at Chelsea.
