Always liked the tube but I think you have to know just what you are doing. Enjoyed the Paris metro (?) but it is not that safe, my son was mugged. The New York subway is now great albeit very complicated to the unfamiliar, like me.

I have been on a few great train journeys. From Ostend to Venice which gave me my first experience of the Alps; I had a compartment to myself going through Switzerland and was running back and forth in my excitement. Ostend to Warsaw which was an experience; this was while the Iron Curtain still existed and we had to keep changing trains; as to be expected the West German ones were ultra efficient and the guards dressed in a very militaristic manner; changed at the strangely named Zoological Garden station in Berlin onto a East German train which was extremely basic. Changed at the border again onto a Polish train which seemed like it had come from the Dark Ages of the railways. In Poland from Warsaw to Katowice where I saw a most unusual sight when emerging from the station, a coal mine pit head near the city centre. Went on a train through the Canadian Rockies which is the most spectacular place I have ever been. Used a very pleasant train in Australia probably in NSW. In Israel from Haifa to Jerusalem which was my first experience outside of Europe and special. But the best train journey I have had was in Thailand travelling south from Bangkok towards Malaysia; my wife and friends wanted to fly but I was insistent on the train as I wanted to see the country; the train is a big deal there and I thought Bangkok station a great place; the steam train itself was so different; sitting in a carriage with locals carrying all sorts of things including wildlife and a Buddhist monk sitting opposite; you could stand on a platform outside and watch the landscape change; there was a restaurant car like nothing I have experienced where you could get a whole range of dirt cheap delicious Thai food.

Sorry for being so self indulgent but I have enjoyed recalling all that.

    The end

The most miserable train journey I’ve ever had was returning home from the FA Cup semi final loss to QPR in 1982, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so low after a match.

Most terrifying train ride was Birmingham New Street to Smethwick West station in 1983 with Millwall fans on the night we overturned a 0-3 first leg League Cup defeat to win the second leg 5-1.

They were the dregs of humanity, hassling young women and old people and actively hunting Albion fans.

I had my Albion scarf under my coat and tucked into my underpants I was s h I t t I n g myself so much.

Will heritage steam trains continue to run? Under climate legislation coal powered trains could very well be outlawed. Perhaps they can convert the Flying Scotsman to electric

They are struggling to acquire the correct coal anyway. I don’t believe that the coal needed for steam trains is available in the UK anymore, it has to come from Belgium; that is what I read anyway. The new coal mine that was going to be opened would have supplied the heritage railways but that mine opening was stopped. How sad it would be if those lovely trains are sidelined because of a minimal amount of coal.

Hi Bill. Yes I know Ashtead well. We looked at a couple of houses there when I first got transferred to London. We ended up in Langley Vale, backing the Downs, on the racecourse side, and moved to West Sus*** when I retired

Oh, so I’m not the only one on here that was incarcerated in one of those establishments!

When it works train is a great way to travel. Pre Covid always used the train to get into London (46 mins for me) just for a day out in what for me is the world's greatest city. Also brilliant for various sport and theatre visits. Hate the tube always use surface trains if I can.

Back in the 80's went from Odense on Funen to Copenhagen on Zealand. To cross the straits train simply went onto the ferry and off again the other end. There's a tunnel and bridge now. Quality of their trains were light years ahead of ours. And they say bring back British Rail.

It'sgot to the House of Lords (It's not just steam locos, but everything steam powered) Thier Lordships want it confirmed that these will be specifically excluded from the proposed legislation. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/environm...bEYXCiXs5OE1Yc
