Does anyone know if a contract equates to guaranteed money? e.g. I sign a 3 year contract at 10k per week then I'm guaranteed ~450k even if I get injured.

If that's the case, the problem for a player entering the last 6 months of a contract (without signing a pre-contract agreement with another club) is if he get's injured then that could put paid to any income beyond the end of his existing contract. It's also a problem for the club as a player in such a situation might be inclined to 'nurse' himself through that last 6 months to prevent injury. Both the player and the club have to perform their risk analysis and decide what's the best approach for them to take. Obviously, the older a player is (e.g. Smudge) or the more injury prone a player is (e.g. Ogbene) the greater the risk on both sides.

I think in professional sport, not necessarily football, players have to be at the top of their game at all times to perform well, so if a player tries to nurse himself through a certain period, then that would reflect on his performance and then clubs maybe thinking of signing him could think again, although you definitely have a point.

There are standard forms for players contracts copies of which are in display in Clifton Museum if anyone is interested.
But then it depends how the gaps are filled in as to what the player is entitled to.
So some players maybe entitled to guaranteed money, whereas others may not.
I'm sure the PFA monitors this very closely but in essence it depends what each individual contract says.

Richie Towell,s form dropped dramatically when he was on loan with us and his contract ran out with Brighton. PW openly admitted it was the reason we didn't try to sign him permanently

Now we need to tie Wiles and a few others down pay them what they want and stop ****ing about with **** offers .
Didn’t think of that til I saw this post, agree
