Apperently we "are aware" that the price we have been quoted is higher than offered to other clubs.

We need to ignore that to a degree this window - clubs know we're desperate and know we have money, we're going to be put through the ringer.

I think the "desperate or mercenary" is oversimplifying it.

Howe and everyone else is obviously selling the dream of beating the drop; not getting people in to go down. Aren't all footballers mercenaries to a degree? Anyone coming to Newcastle now or anytime in the future is going to look for an outrageous salary but that is the case with all clubs with big purses; without exception.

I think gone are the days when we think about how much players are worth. We are living in a different universe here and our only constraint is FFP. For a long time, Citeh were paying huge transfer fees and eye-watering wages. We have to expect to top all of the others for the best talent to come here. Right now, we don't need Galacticos but we need solid players. Whoever they are, each of their agents will try to get the most that they can get. And clubs will be taking the roaring piss whenever Newcastle come calling. Worst yet, it is January...

We just have to turn a blind eye to the numbers and hope whoever comes here is coming to do some hard graft and perform. The players will just see the dollar signs because we can't offer them Champions League or trophies. We have to put something on the table and that is going to be a lotta money!!!!

Agree. This talk of mercenary is bullshoite.
Times and football have changed. Gone are the days with several players saying at one club their whole career. They move clubs more ofte now. This also goes for manager of course.

Speaking of career, for footballers its short so a few years in a different city to earn some extra money is something most people would jump at, without blinking.

There is ambitions, so I wouldnt call it mercenary. In fact, you could argue its more mercenary to stay at club without ambitions - even if you earn less.

In my mind, it shows the exact opposite. I don't doubt the money is attractive and a part of the attraction but this is a fella who went abroad to challenge himself. There's not a long list of players who have done it and the list of players who've done it as successfully as he has is even shorter. If he's coming here, I think it shows he wants to be in at the beginning of what promises to be an incredible journey.

He went there to win Laliga,
and he did. He even got into team of the season.

Hes a lad with ambitions. Hes next goal is to be a part of Englands WC squad. Is there a better option for him than Newcastle? The bench at Chelski certainly isnt.

    Newcastle agree fee for Trippier
Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier.

Sky Sports News understand the deal to be in the region of £12m, plus add-ons.

The England international is now set to travel to Tyneside for a medical. Personal terms are not thought to be a problem.

Atletico wanted Trippier to stay but the defender made it clear he wanted to return to his homeland.

The 31-year-old will become the first signing of Newcastle’s Saudi-backed regime.

Huge signing for us this and a big statement of what's to come from the new owners. No messing about got one of there well I think Eddie's main targets in asap now they have plenty of time to keep signing others. To think under Ashley we'd of got excited about the possibility of this sort of signing only for it to drag on the full month whilst we signed a couple of loan players then falls through last day of the window. We've already offered big money for another defender in Botman as well we are not messing about.

Was trying to think who the last ‘current’ England International we signed was - literally thought it could’ve been Owen but then Townsend sprang to mind (assuming he was playing for England around that time).

Just been to look - he was not, his last cap was in 2016 just before he signed for us. He didn't get another cap after signing for us.

So our last English "current" international was indeed Owen.
