Best goalie in Scotland by a mile in his time.
Also, as a youngster asking for his autograph, I have to say he was always the perfect gentleman.
He wasn't an instinctive keeper. Taught himself how to position best to make a save. Hence whenever you see a photo of him losing a goal he looks caught flatfooted ?
He was pretty hopeless lets be honest. I've never understood the dewy eyed sentimentality he gets from many in the support. He completely sold the jerseys in 2 cup finals late 70s which I remember all too well, and before my time he did the same for the national side v England of all teams when he shipped 5 at home. Never played for Scotland again after that, I think I'm correct in saying, and rightly so. Check out the highlights of that one if you dare! Ok, so he got into the 78 WC squad but that was more to do with his old pal Ally MacLeod being the manager, I've no doubt about that. "Best goalie in Scotland by a mile in his time"!! Come on. Stewart Kennedy was getting a game before him mid 70s, that says it all. Bobby Clark was hopeless and if he was playing today with all the scrutiny that goes with the position, we'd all know it and there would be little argument.
Give me a break.
Goalkeeping standards have never been lower.
They can't even catch the bloody ball anymore.
Roy Race wouldn't be happy, the ŵay they give away corners in an effort to be theatrical.
Take yersell to fu ck.
I went to my first Aberdeen game 1970.
Bobby Clark is the best keeper we've had in that period.
And I will stand on Jim Leighton's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.*
As a keeper he was miles ahead of his time.
Organised his area, commanded his area, positional sense second to none, threw the ball out to build from the back (when every other keeper was launching it into orbit)......if he was playing now, with the penchant for "playing through the press" from your own goaline virtually, he'd be bought and sold for monumental sums.
Yes he sold a soft one in the 78 final, all keepers do occasionally, the 79 LC final he was playing with one arm, due to the injury that gave Leighton his chance in the team.
The centenary International when it was 5-0, Scotland collapsed ......plenty blame to go round in that game.
He eschewed the "save for the camera", and the reason that he lost his Scotland place was in no small part down to the Weegia up to their usual sh1te.
Bobby Clark is an Aberdeen legend min.
*niche reference relating to Steve Earle, Townes van Zant and Bob Dylan.
Well I never started going regularly until 77 so fair enough you have more years than me, but in 79 he slid along his goal line like an utter fanny for what seemed like an eternity before smashing himself into the goalpost and spending next 10 minutes ready to burst into tears with the pain of it all. The present custodian takes pelters for similar! He was nowhere near Jackson's winner in the same game, ditto for Johnstone's winner in 78, and less said about MacDonald's opener in 78 the better. Ok, so these are the two high profile games that everyone remembers from the telly, but plenty of other times in the flesh his feet were planted firmly in treacle, looking bemused as the ball sailed over his head and into the net for another goal. The Clark Stance!! Painful to see then, painful to watch now.
Bobby Clark was inferior to both Leighton and Snelders and imho just a vastly overrated keeper within the support....still...40 odd years after retiring.
Hibs wasn't it, that scored against us, stopping us going 13 games without losing a goal.
Even typing this I can remember where I was when the news came in that we had actually conceded a goal.
( My Aunties in Baker Street if you must know)
I was f'uckin ragin.
