Well this tread has derailed a bit… not too uncommon on here. But I noticed you used the word *smorgasbord* Kriti. To my surprise it came up now as a suggestion when I was typing. I guess it’s an expression then, but do you know it’s origin? One of your languages Chas?

It is Swedish. It is a buffet style meal being a mixture. It is used generically now for a mixture/range of choice generally.

To Chastenor not to chasten - that is the question.

I first came across the word sometime back in the 60s, there was a Swedish restaurant out Lytham St Annes way that did a smorgasbord, it was an exotic destination for our family, we were more into ham, egg and chips or roast beef and yorkshire pudding for a meal out. I think it had closed by the late 70s, although I may be out a bit with the dates.

I thought choosing the username chastenor was clever, but it has proved to be a chastening experience

Yes, it could be an abbreviation for some sort of puritan northerner.

I think we have a great mix on here. Surely we should be smorgasbord.footymad.net?

First time I went To Ibiza with three of my mates, all four us were about 20. We hit the nightclub scene near to midnight and upon entry to the club all we saw were bronzed blonde young women shaking their stuff.

One of the mates said, "F*ck me it's a smorgasbord in here".

It was the first time I had heard the expression but OMG he was right.
