This Post Office programme about Horizon

Of course we all knew after the first Radio One Big Weekend scandal that the Post Office was rotten at delivery level but in all honesty when it was so rotten right at the top is it any surprise the posties pulled the scam that they did for those tickets? They were never going to get properly investigated and if they did investigate it they'd just cover it up and refuse access to evidence.

Corrupt top to bottom. I blame the Tories.

Forgive me but I'm never sure if some political comments are tongue in cheek or actually believed by the poster. I reckon all shades of government are to blame to a certain extent for this fiasco. To blame the Tories alone is bizarre and I have heard such a view around the past few days since the programme stated airing so this is not getting at you Deeranged despite not knowing if you are on a wind up. The system and the Post Office's initial deplorable behaviour took place when Labour was in power and the main parliamentary help in getting justice came from a Tory MP. The government continued to own the PO through to when the scandal was finally totally exposed and has still not full compensated all those due dragging the Tories into a share of the blame. But in some eyes the Tories are to blame for all the woes of the world. Truly bizarre!

Two other comments on it are it is/was obscene that the faceless money men could get £40m+ or about 80% of the court compensation award. They took risks but that percentage is criminal. Also I know that the Daily Mail isn't everyone's cup of tea or even chosen newspaper but they were the main media backing the postmasters and had a long running campaign for justice which was not recognised in the programme apart from a fleeting view of a reporter asking questions of the PO CEO.

Well said Dodbroon. I think all politics is struggling just now, so much so that it seems to me to be political parties are attacking voters. We need changes to keep or even start growing our economy for the benefit of us all.

I read an article on Sunday saying they think there are hundreds more who have paid up "shortfalls" and still haven't come forward.

We should be asking why it took a TV programme to force the post Office and government's hands to get this mess resolved and to identify those culpable.

Sure I heard the guy Davies ( lib dem ) who was basically the minister covering the post office had called for around 50 resignations whilst he's been in politics ........but is refusing to take any blame or resign himself. 😄

Absolutely right Deeranged. There is no way this fiasco was not known about in political circles and why on earth was the honour given in the first place.
Daily Mail has been banging on about this farce for years, but as you point out it takes a TV programme which says these events are true, to make an impact.
I don't believe that Paula Vennills is the only person who delivered this massive breach of justice. All those who knew are equally guilty. There's no way she single handedly managed this or single handedly decided on the course of action taken.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey was appointed Minister for Postal Affairs in 2010 in the coalition government.
In May that year he (Davey) received a letter from Alan Bates the wrongly convicted postmaster at the centre of the ITV’s new series highlighting the problems with the Post Office’s failing IT system.
Alan Bates asked for a meeting with Sir Ed Davey where we can present our case to you.
Davey wrote back primarily informing that this miscarriage of justice was ‘an operational and contractual matter’ for the Post Office.
The future Lib Dem leader concluded ‘I do not believe a meeting would serve any useful purpose’.
The final paragraph of the article states.
Asked about the affair this week, Davey regrets not doing more but claimed to have been ‘deeply misled’ by Post Office executives.
