Thread: WBA53 match thread

Can’t believe the sheer arrogance of this side, thinking 1-0 is enough, in total control with the normal tippy tappy going nowhere football, hardly creating anything of note, sitting back after 78 mins asking for trouble, all down to Corberan and his safety first tactics, this guy will not take us to the next level, far too cautious, just release the handbrake a bit, Andy Johnson mentioned it in commentary that Albion will not score 4 and fives and rarely 3 under Corberan with the way he plays

It’s the inability to score goals that kills us imo. We should have put the game to bed after our very good 1st half. But, Diangana, on a couple of occasions, and Fellows never shoots…

We can’t rely only on Maja, who seems to have hit a drought - where will goals come from to be a top team!? That was my biggest concern before the season and still is. Defensively there may be mistakes but I don’t think our real problems lie there.

And to sit back and try to defend a 1-0 lead will always come back and bite you - we are far too prone of doing just that and far too early as well.

We reverted to the dreadful negative walking pace in our almost conceited belief that we could see the game out. Unbelievable!
A continuance of the more attacking style would have not allowed Oxford to dominate and score the inevitable equaliser.
Mowatt very lucky to finish the game without serious injury. Certain red card.
Furlong lucky to have not received a yellow. He played ok, but remains susceptible to unnecessary petulance and is clearly targeted / riled.
Disappointing result albeit many positives, particularly Grant and Racic.

Having Laurel and Hardy at centre back doesn’t help either

It was a game we had complete control of and looked odds on for three points in the first half. However, we again took our foot off the accelerator in order to protect a one goal lead. As I’ve said so many times before, ‘attack is the best form of defence.’ Unfortunately, for all Carlos’ pluses this is his achilles heel.

Managed to watch the game on Sky and, to be fair, in his post match interview Corberan at least had the grace to admit that we went into containment mode and sat back too early which invited pressure. Whether he does anything about it of course is another matter but this particular failing (alongside too many sloppy passes still) seems to be glaringly obvious to most fans.

On the plus side, I thought Grant was excellent and Racic at last beginning to show why we recruited him. Also thought that our pressing off the ball was much improved with us forcing several attacking movements by Oxford back to their own goalkeeper.

Elsewhere, Maja may not be scoring but I think his hold up and off the ball play is good whereas Ajayi still worries me at the back and I still don't know what Wallace offers. Diangana demonstrated his skill on the ball but also sadly demonstrated the comparative ease with which he is pushed off it. As others-including the Sky commentary team-have said, both he and Fellows also chose not to take decent shooting chances when they fell to them.

An improvement on recent performances but still much to work on.
