Poor choice of words but he's been an "experiment" for a while in that position, despite the fact he doesn't play there for his club. And to be fair to him he's done well previously, albeit against very inferior opposition, Malta for example. So Gareth has obviously felt he was the next best option given the injuries to Henderson and Phillips. And you can understand why. England were expected to have plenty of possession and by getting him on the ball, you'd assume he'd have a significant impact on the game. It hasn't happened for a variety of reasons.

If it was me I'd now have Bellingham drop deeper, Foden as a 10 and give Anthony Gordon a chance on the left. He either does that or swaps out TAA for Gallagher or one of the youngsters.
