I should have mentioned that one of the really outstanding things about the whole night were the tremendous arrangements by Joe Duddell and Fiona Brice.

Best run in ever was in Scarborough, after a day and a half of pitch battles the local Bizzies enlisted support from Newcastle and Leeds. So off we went to Filey for another do! Great days, but some combatants from both sides got seriously hurt and a couple of Burnley lads ended up doing some serious bird.

Me and my mates always ensured we knew where the escape route was, we always had to a runner, we were always outnumbered 10 to 1 or more. If we'd stood our ground we'd have been massacred. We also had to beware of being ambushed, devious tw@ts them Mods.

I was just reminiscing and the 100 or so Northern Soul aficionados I hung about with had not got a grammar school education between us, ambushing the bourgeoisie was all part of the fun.

Never thought of it like that mon ami, I suspect there were grammar school boys on both sides, for me and my mates it was all a bit of a laugh, bit like Cowboys and Indians for ****agers.

It's pretty much generally acknowledged that "Northern Soul" was the creation of young working class British white men who identified with Black generated music from the other side of the Atlantic. Work all week and dance your socks off on the Saturday "All-Nighter".

Going back to the Proms our mate Supersub6 said, "I should have mentioned that one of the really outstanding things about the whole night were the tremendous arrangements by Joe Duddell and Fiona Brice." It's now clear and obvious the "Northern Soul" musical genre had some real substance to it. Sadly Berry Gordy did not get a mention but he was a musical genius who inspired the "Motown Sound" of which I am a huge fan.

That was true of the 60īs BT with the Stones, at times the Beatles, Led Zep and many others. Many of them performed music originally written by black Americans.

John Lennon claimed that Smokey Robinson was the greatest living poet. Might have been a bit OTT but some of his love songs are still as valid as ever S_c.

Ghost in my House is a killer dancer, one of the faster ones. Indiana wants me, great piece of soul music but not a dancer as the former. These were Motown tracks and the great musicians that studio had were in demand from other small labels wishing to get big. Thousands of tracks produced sold poorly Stateside buy we picked them up cos of the underground movement at the Wheel and Casino later. Beside Motown and Detroit were Chicago, Philadelphia, lots of US Cities and relatively small record labels tried to emulate. This is what gave us NS as our DJ's chased and discovered these tunes. Hope that helps, but please watch on iPlayer
Watched it all Dave and enjoyed it. The Night was the highlight for me, another song I know well and never associated with Northern Soul or
any sort of soul at all come to that. Tainted Love was another surprise, never knew that originated in the 60s. I found I was gradually drawn into it, it was a warm, relaxing and comforting experience, almost like sliding into a hot bath. Is Northern Soul meant to make you feel like you're in the bath though, not sure it is.

    Surely Bobby Dylan mon ami,

"And so it did happen like it could have been foreseen,
The timeless explosion of fantasy's dream,
At the peak of the night, the king and the queen,
    Tumbled all down into pieces,

'The tragic figure', her sister did shout,
"Leave her alone, god damn you, get out",
And I in my armor, turning about,
And nailing her in the ruins of her pettiness,

Beneath a bare lightbulb the plaster did pound,
Her sister and I in a screaming battleground,
And she in between the victim of sound,
Soon shattered as a child to the shadows,

All is gone, all is gone, admit it, take flight,
I gagged in contradiction, tears blinding my sight,
My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night,
Leaving all of love's ashes behind me,

The wind knocks my window, the room it is wet,
The words to say I'm sorry I haven't found yet,
I think of her often and hope whoever she's met,
Will be fully aware of how precious she is"
