I can't understand why they re-built it in the original oval shape - meaning fans at both ends are a long way from the pitch. I know it's being used for athletics at the commonwealth games but they wouldn't have known that when it was re-built and it doesn't seem to have been used much for anything other than football since - unless I've missed something?

A prime example of this type of stadia can be seen in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich all used to have the athletic track/oval type stadium, Munich using the Olympic stadium and building the Allianz arena. The other two simply knocked down the stands behind each goal and brought them in closer to the pitch. Probably increasing the capacity in the process and turning the stadium into a "football" stadium.
