Unfortunately both Derby and Nottingham live on their history. It's about time we started re wrightingbthe history books, with the Rams anyway.
Places ending in by do tend to be Viking settlements. Where they installed there own laws. Thus the term by-laws.

I never left early from the 1946 Cup Final . The pubs were not open at that time.
There is a hell of a lot of England south of Ashby and Rugby, but if you mark all the settlements on a map then you see where they predominate eg Spilsby.Tealby,Coningsby,Grimsby.Selby etc etc. Tenby in Pembrokeshire is an odd one, but is on the coastline and not inland.Originally Posted by AnagRam
Okay Awks...this is a football forum not the History Channel so I'll be brief. You have a habit of saying things that are simply untrue with absolute certainty. I never disagreed that 'by' is a sign of an original Viking settlement. Neither did I disagree that they are most common in the NE. You said 'places which end in 'by' can ONLY be found in NE England' and like your other comment about places 'NEVER' changing you've been shown to be just plain wrong on both counts. Wouldn't usually pick you up on either but your comment about Keogh's mask and your 'glee' at Derby going out ****ed me off.
OK PC plod let me give you my credentials, I've supported derby since I was 5 nearly 30 years ago, went to my first game when I was 7 in 1989, got my first season ticket at 13 in 1995 which I held until I was 21 when I took a job that wouldn't allow me to go regularly anymore. I have a dcfc tatoo, my entire family are derby mad. I even convinced my Canadian mate who features later in this story to get a ram tatoo.
I left on 84 minutes on friday, I was confident our goose was cooked and I knew if I left then I might get to spend an hour socialising at the weekend with my wife which I get to do maybe once every couple months, I also had a Canadian mate with me who had just arrived in the country and wanted to catch up with old mates in town, i love dcfc but they aren't my life, the club still got my 40 quid and i still got to enjoy the game and cheer them on throughout. The point of my tale is that you don't know anyone's story and you aren't the boss of the match day experience so f
I don't mind anyone going early it their perogative. What gets me is the heir to too disregard for others who want to watch the game. I missed the rare event of us scoring the other week because some plonker in front got up to go down early at half time for his pint stood talking to someone down the row blocking the veiw of everyone behind. If you want to go get up when the ball is out of play so as to not spoil others enjoyment.
Seems we've actually found a topic Awks knows something about, unfortunately it's totally non football related
Anthropology is all about the workings of cultures and societies all around the world, and that takes in how football fans interact with each other. Politicians should also take an interest in the subject and then they might understand the point of view of those they are trying to influence both here and overseas.Originally Posted by ManxRam
