In this modern era there are only two outstanding players that shine as out of this world, they are a dying breed now and you hardly have anyone to call the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi, and in the Pele era there were tons of out of this world players that you had to call the best of the best and had the option to pick who was the greatest of all time.

Pray tell, my friend, what you mean by modern era? Would 1990 till now be the modern era? Or is it 2000 onwards? Or perhaps before that say 1975?

"Ignore those players" didn't you see that it was out of the 10 best players of all time, not the complete list of the greatest players of all time.

Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi don't really have real competiton in this modern era to really test them on accolades unlike during the Pele era, as it is just them running the show, so to call those two as the greatest of all time out of all the rest without them being in the era when football was fully alive is beyond an understatement.

Why such odd year? Not 2000?
Ah let me guess, 2002 Zidane scored a wonder goal to win the European Cup.
Seems your 'modern era' is just to suit your argument.

2003 was the year Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Man Utd and became a star and officially started the modern era, and 2004 was the year Lionel Messi debuted for Barcelona and became a star.

Zidane, Ronaldo (Original), Ronaldinho and your Samuel Eto's had done it all, and their era had come to past to make way for the modern era and bring light to new stars in the making Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi.
