I was at our game against Newport on the final day, and to become champions we had to win by 4 and your lot had to lose to Plymouth.
But that was never going to happen was it, so we had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Those wonderful memories are still there for us as well, 1981 was a great year to be a 'red n white'.

Fantastic memories going to a home game knowing almost certainly, we were going to win, total contrast to last miserable season. Onwards and upwards.

Recall it like it was yesterday no matter how many years have passed.

Stood below the main stand with my mates Barry White and Russ Batty radio to my ear trying to get the Barnsley result but Fearn's goal made it complete. Baz had shot onto the pitch and left us and it seemed an age before I could get through the throng of thousands to face the centre of the stand and join in the wild celebrations.

Oh happy days! The sound at the end of the clip of 'you'll never walk alone' brought it all back. Boy could we sing together in those days.

Close season with Porterfield defecting to the Lane with big Stan is another story.

Yes what was he thinking going to the Blunts like that, although he did bring them straight back up didn't he.
Was it Emelyn Hughes next up, that must have come as a surprise!

Stancliffe didn't leave at the same time though Brin. He played both seasons in division 2 and Kerr sold him when we were relegated in '83

Yes, Stan played alongside Emlyn Hughes (Jimmy Mullen was dropped, and later sold)

I always like chatting about this era for both of our clubs, and Ive nicked this thread and started it on Tykesmad as well tonight lol.
Come over and share your views eh on Barnsley's view of promotion in 1981. And if any of us scratch and bite and poke the eyes, remember its nothing personal, its just footy business.

I've got it too...I doubt weather there's ever been two sides as good as that in the history of the division..one or two teams may have ran away with it over the years but us and Barnsley were for that division, special...I'm grateful for being lucky enough to see the fantastic football that was played..
