I have a genuine bug bear when it comes to keepers and penalties. Why do most dive before the ball is kicked? The number of penalties that are poorly struck or poorly placed - if the keeper stood still and moved once the ball is struck would give the keeper a greater chance of saving.
If the penalty is well struck in a corner, the odds are you won’t get there anyway. So why make a shootout a lottery by hoping you go the way the ball is struck? Put the odds in your favour, stand still.

The Peter Shilton technique - didn't work.

Is the correct answer. Undeniable world class goalkeeper, but who waited for the ball to be struck on penalties before moving. His record for saving them was notoriously poor.

Perhaps someone would like to go through the press reports for each of the 10 matches that weren’t saved ( as per the previous transfermrkt link and give an analyses of how many he went the right way for.
We know for the one he “saved” he went the wrong way.

I think there are times when it is necessary for Slocombe to put it in Row Z, and Sunday's game was one of them. Given how far out of his area he was, and how close to the touchline he was, it left him/us very vulnerable to any loss of control which is exactly what happened.

Oh definitely, he should’ve done in that specific scenario, but it’s not our default, generally we’ll want him to try and retain possession. So sometimes he’ll make the wrong decision, but it’s better accepting that than just saying to him ‘always clear it’.

To be fair to him as well it’s actually Cameron who loses it with a shocking blind pass. It’s an error from Slocombe but there’s still more than enough opportunity for us to deal with it even after that.
