This crept into the UK charts in 1969 thanks to it being a part of the soundtrack to Lindsay Anderson's excellent film "If" starring Malcolm McDowall. According to my Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, it spent six weeks on the charts reaching 28th spot at one point.
I was totally transfixed by it at the time and bought it as a single when it came out (and later bought the whole "Missa Luba" album which is excellent - in parts.) I still enjoy it immensely.
In the film, and typical of Lindsay Anderson's style, he has public schoolboy McDowall rolling in the hay with a girl who'd been serving teas in a transport caff while this high point of the Congolese sung Mass plays out...
