Sorry rA I can’t edit on my phone so I’ll add - I’ve been privileged to spend time/ support/ coach in two sports where male and female genuinely participate side by side (athletics) or together (equestrian) and you will have to believe me that I’ve seen that the reaction to triumph, adversity, injury, criticism etc varies by gender (as it does age, parental expectation and suchlike) and my comment on female refs merely suggests that any such variation is yet to be exposed at the highest level - and female refs may prove more adept, wouldn’t that be great!

I suspect there’s a tiny element of ***ism in all of us and I’m as much the victim as I am the perpetrator of gender stereotype based banter. It’s usually funny, not malicious and therefore not something that needs addressing imo.
The rest I largely agree with you about.

As regards the ‘gammon’ thing. To me it’s ‘unhelpful’ because it’s easy to react to and usually risks putting the user in the wrong, but ultimately isn’t it just a p*ss take out of those ‘Colonel Blimp’ types who’s complexions tend to become ever more florid the more enraged they become at their typical targets...non white people, refugees, immigrants, the EU, empowered women and all things remotely ‘woke’ etc?
