Apologies for this, because it has been done to death a bit, but for instance he’s playing Jones on the right because he thinks it’s the best place for him. He played him there last season when he did have a ton of other options.

He mentioned in the magpie circle podcast that he likes a bit of unpredictability and as Jackal says, he wants to match up to other team’s supposed strengths and weaknesses.

Personally I think those who think we’re going to start putting players in their generally accepted best positions when everyone’s fit are going to be disappointed, our coach’s insecurities about others will see to that.

My lad read out his record to me earlier on, 20ish points from 22 games, Maynard’s a lucky man, surely no other Notts coach has been kept on with that record over half a season at this level. It seems to be a case of crossing our fingers and hoping that things will improve.

If his winless run continues after Thursday, his luck may start to run out...

I share your concerns, and we'll know a lot more after Thursday which is a game I'd target for a win. I guess I think I've seen some signs that this might work, but I bet the executive branch have been impressed that we're still leaking horror goals.

I know durham is a big fan of Cedwyn Scott, but I just haven't seen what he's seen. I would love to see Scott bag a goal from somewhere, because he hasn't scored in ages and is clearly low on confidence.

    Spot on, freemuzzy.

One of the first things Maynard said when he arrived - which I remember because it struck me as a strange thing to need to say - was how confident he was about his ability to match up tactically against managers at this (higher) level. Maybe therein lies the major weakness I've seen in him. Perhaps it was a sign that he's too obsessed with that aspect of management, or that he's not as confident in that respect as he was claiming.

SM (from what I've seen so far) seems to me to be far too concerned with setting teams up to match/counter or catch out the opposition and not focused enough on establishing a consistent set up that brings the best out of his own players. I've seen it before in managers and head coaches, and one of the tell-tale signs is the frequent deployment of players in positions that obviously don't suit them, suggesting that the coach/manager has become so fixated on the detail that they've lost sight of the obvious (can't see the wood for the trees, in other words).

So much of football is about mental confidence, and although a player will rarely complain if they're being picked to play, even if it's not in their preferred role, the reality is that if you have one or two players privately walking out of the tunnel thinking "I hope I can do this" rather than "I know I can do this" then the team is already vulnerable.

Apologies for the double post above. For some reason MAD is now telling me it hasn't posted my message due to a "database error", so I try again and then discover it's appeared twice!
