A lot of pundits are spouting this expression all of a sudden. Can someone tell me what it actually means? The tripe we have to listen to!

Tonight...PSG 4 v 2 Man City
Post match interview with Pep. 'They had an extra man in the middle and played a 'false' 9.
Pep just f*ck off and come out and say you were beat by the better team on the night. Only then will footy fans accept a true comment from you.
NB. Got to feel for Celtic tonight.....3 goals but 2 ruled out for offside and a 3rd ruled out for a foul in a build up.
Then they have a player sent off but an own goal by a Young Boys defender left them winning 1-0....they deserved that.

A striker who doesn't default to a position near the opposing central defenders. Basically drops into midfield positions most of the time, so in theory the central defenders are left with the headache of not knowing whether to sit back and risk being attacked by an extra midfielder, or to to go with him and open a space.
It's practically useless at our level with some of the lumps in League 1 because neither the defenders would realise it was happening, nor the attacking team would have the ability to consistently use a spare player to any meaningful advantage. Hugill would be dragged into pushing and shoving with midfielders instead of defenders, JCH would never be able to cover the yards to get back up top, and our defence would just assume the striker had been playing safe with offside.
"He's on the grass now."
Well that's damn useful considering that's where football is generally played.
Yesterday Gary Neville said that "Man City recycle the ball so much that they disrupt their own momentum"
WTF is he talking about?
