OT - Transgender footballers

No reluctance to comment, or fear of flak, Andy. It just seemed to run its course about a week ago. Seems unfair to most, including me, to allow transgender participants in sports where strength is a particular virtue?end of really.
On the other hand, there is, imo, a place for mixed sports and - having dabbled in mixed hockey many years ago - I can assure you that the women could be brutal.

By slightly bizarre coincidence I went to watch one of my granddaughters play softball yesterday and amongst the opposition ranks was a boy currently transitioning to a girl.
This was at what might best be described as inter township U13 level. There didn’t appear to be an issue and no disrespect or outrage was shown whatsoever.
I suppose, especially at this age level, soft ball isn’t the most physical of sports although, for those who may not know, the ball is anything but soft and as it becomes more physically competitive I imagine more questions may be asked of the appropriateness of this individual continuing to play in a female league.
Heartening to see such tolerance being shown in the U.S. however, again at this level, there was no use of changing facilities and I’m guessing that as adolescence kicks in there is likely to be a different attitude.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect is that transitioning a such a young age should have been sanctioned in the conservative old USA. Too young for a tattoo but old enough to ‘change gender’ seems odd to me.

I think we?ve gone off subject here, and those who expressed an opinion seemed in agreement. Strange how some of our more vocal contributors have gone ?off the radar? on this one, fearful that a dogmatic response would attract ?flak? Maybe? No pun intended

This subject is one of the more tiresome topics of the culture wars. There is considerable misinterpretation and deliberate misrepresentation of the issue. In my view its isn't a party political issue and those politicians that have used it as such are both misguided irresponsible and frankly bigoted.

The matter requires sensible discussion and resolution by all parties, not whipping up into this pointless debate, used to stir up people. But hey that's not the way these days is it? My beef with The green party and the SNP is their obsession with this, rather than adopting a supportive approach that seeks a solution all can agree on.

My only encounter personally was over a decade ago when we appointed a transgender person where I worked, the only issue was the use of toilets and the gender neutral disabled toilet was the solution, no further discussion needed.

The issues that have arisen are IMO down to ill informed decision makers not knowing either the law and fear (mostly erroneous) of being sued.

I have no view or opinion as to whether a man or woman wish to be known as a different gender and dress/act accordingly, but if physically they remain their birth gender, then clearly their participation in sports or use of facilities for the opposite gender is not appropriate, which has been reinforced by the Supreme Court.

But its not an issue I am particularly engaged with hence not bothering to add much to the debate.

Absolutely correct, except a lot of trans themselves don't want that. They insist on invading women's private places, like toilets and changing rooms. How do you have a sensible compromise when that attitude exists. It is pure misogyny.

They are not biological women, so women protect their rights, against this guff.
i wonder how trans would react if men insisted on sharing their private spaces?

This story is getting a lot of traction. Seems that she is smashing it and winning fairly easily.

I don't have an issue with protests but both her and her mum have been subject to a lot of vitriol and abuse, I don't agree with that, it's not them they should be targeting it should be those who allow it imo.

Yes quite right and all those protesting pushing the agenda, treating this individual like some sort of martyr.

Having seen the build of the athlete, you can clearly see the advantage. He even looks like a boy facially. Mediocre boys' competitor, to dominating girls of the same age. Wrong wrong wrong.
