We're not talking about the British navy, rather, that of a country whose own navy, rather than escorting boat people back to France, is happy to help them in to UK waters then, call Borderfoce to pick them up. The French have even been handing out life jackets and have recently had the temerity, to ask the UK to give them back!

I don't think this is worth starting another thread, but has anyone else noticed how all the early reports regarding the idiot that drove into the Liverpool fans, that he is a 'white male'?

I'm not sure, but with other events that have happened previously where people have been killed or injured, did the Police initially refer to the suspect's colour?

I see. I was just trying to point out that the reason the Royal Navy doesn't get involved is that it isn't in their remit to deal with immigration. It seems many people think it is, for some reason. I didn't realise the French navy had it in theirs.

That is purely a governmental decision and many people think they should be involved in protecting our shoreline.

Connolly's offence was "category A" - meaning "high culpability" - and that both the prosecution and her own barrister agreed she "intended to incite serious violence".

At her appeal, Connolly claimed that while she accepted she intended to stir up racial hatred, she always denied trying to incite violence.

But Lord Justice Holroyde said in a judgement this week, external evidence "clearly shows that she was well aware of what she was admitting".

Sentencing guidelines for the offence indicate a starting point of three years' custody.

So what would you see as a reasonable sentence?
A short sentence followed by lengthy community service.

As Elite quoted, the article I posted contains a clear explanation as to why she received the sentence she did. Maybe read and understand it and your opinions may just become a little bit more informed. From what you post on here informed reading doesnt appear to be something you do very much of, unfortunately.
Thanks BFP I have probably read far more than you on this topic and from many sources and then I have made my own opinion.

As to your first point I would also say I think both Ricky Jones and Liam O?Hanna should be treated sensibly.

I do not believe Lucy Connolly is a danger to society and I also think there is zero chance of her reoffending so I cannot see much point in such a long sentence.

During your in depth investigation of her case did you read much about the defendant?

I however don?t need to resort to the comments you seem to like as I believe everybody's opinions are valid.

I completely agree that she offers little threat to anyone and a jail sentence of that length does not feel like it protects society at all. That said, given her actions she has fallen foul of the law of the land and has been well advised to get the most lenient sentence possible.

There are thousands of people incarcerated in this country that offer very little threat to any of us if they were to walk the streets. We need a much larger conversation about that and how the law works surrounding sentencing. Picking and choosing individuals based upon our own political beliefs does not do any of us any good.

You can say that about judges too who were undoubtedly, influenced by the noise coming out of Downing Street during these events with the PM labeling people criminals without even having had a court case.
