Shankly reputedly said to the hacks at the press conference when Yeats was signed, “Let me show you round our new centre half”.

I mind when Scotland played a ‘must win’ World Cup qualifier in Naples in late 1965, Jock Stein’s squad was so threadbare due to injuries that he tried a bit of psychology and gave Yeats the number 9 shirt trying to scare the Azzuri. Jim Forrest played upfront and Years plated centre half as usual. We lost 3-0, and the spoilsport radges at Banffshire County Council/Keith Primary School refused to give us the half day off so that we could watch it on live telly. As we raced from Mrs Munro’s class to find out the score, one of the wifie cleaners told us, “We lost 3-0, and dinna leave footprints in the cloakroom, I’ve jist washed the fleer”. My older brother bought Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out that week as consolation.

59 years ago, yet, I can find myself in the garage nowadays with a screwdriver in my hand thinking, “Now fit the fùck have I picked this up for?”

Remember that well...not the bit about the screwdriver...our teacher (Mr Wilson, Cummings Park School) was so keen on fitba that he had his tranny on in the classroom and we all had to sit still and listen which was great for those of us (including George Buchan) who followed Scotland but not such a great experience for at least half the class.

On top of his game pioneering Proper Mannies’ R&B in the London clubs during what trainspotterly closed-mind numbrains refer to as “the 60s” (aye, Pat Boone and the 13th Floor Elevators aye had a pint together), and influenced nearly everybody who chiselled those sounds into their act. That’s you, Paul Weller and Kevin Rowland. He even gave Andy ‘Somers’ a gig.

I know him more for his acting stuff rather than his music, although I was aware he was mostly a musician.

How come he was a supporter of the finest? I didn't think he was from these parts.
