From your own article
This means that it is most commonly used as a third-person pronoun, describing a noun that is owned by several people.
Although their is generally used in a plural form, it is also used as a gender-neutral personal pronoun in place of his or her.
The word commonly denotes that, well, it's commonly used in such a way but isn't unique to that useage.
The Oxford Dictonary states it's fine to use it in the way two people have, and also states that experts can be referred to as they, and you come across like an expert on certain matters so I was using it purely out of respect.

Experts is plural and Merriam Webster is American, they can't even get the usage of 'bring' and 'take' right so I wouldn't lean on them too heavily.
The use of they, their, theirs, them, and themselves in reference to pronouns of indefinite gender and indefinite number is well established in speech and writing, even in literary and formal contexts. These forms have also been adopted by individuals whose gender identity is nonbinary, as illustrated in sense 3d of they. The singular pronoun themself is also increasingly gaining acceptance as an alternative to themselves when referring to just one person.
The reference to 'themself' is self defeating as that is a singular term as opposed to 'themselves' but, most people would expect to use either himself or herself.
and all these from that link, all plural.

The trees have all shed their leaves.
All the furniture in their house is brand-new.
They are on friendly terms with their neighbors.

They are taking the piss and they have shown that the UK education system has failed them. Giving the benefit of considerable doubt and assuming you're not still at school.
