It is very rare to go from having 2 or less letter to solving the puzzle and having 3 in whatever combination of y/g is usually (but not always of course) a good indication that a solve is on the cards.

Naturally there are outliers to this amazing theory as Adventus showed today in going from 1g + 1y to a birdie solve and as we have all found out on some types of words having 4g is no guarantee of a solve. On taking a short look back to validate my theory I even saw CT recently went from 0 then 1y straight to 5g (probably assisted by the 0) and then at the other end of the spectrum a couple of days later started with 3g and still took 5 guesses to solve.
Ultimately, I feel there is a certain randomness about it and my two examples in your note reflect that. There is some degree of logical application and elimination that makes a difference and you can marginally improve your score by careful deduction - but ultimately, it comes down to good and bad luck: which word you used as a starter; which way you jumped in introducing particular new letters; the extent to which you get into a fugue state when much of the word is there but there are too many directions to chose from and then ultimately, when you make a quantum leap, purely through a lucky guess.

I think the most satisfaction comes when you suddenly have a mental breakthrough seeing the only word possible - that has eluded you for the last twenty minutes. That this comes on the fifth or sixth go is often more enjoyable than the lucky guess for a birdy.

Sometimes CAM when any of us has only got 1 or 2 letters after 2 goes, the word actually gets easier to find as a lot of words are ruled out as we have eliminated certain common letters, but if we have got at least 3 of the more common letters, in y or g, then it sometimes throws up a combination of words it could be hence most of us using a burner word to narrow down the letters we can use. Your last bit about having a mental breakthrough is spot on CT, when you have been systematic with the letters and words and even though it comes on the 5th or 6th go, brings both satisfaction and also relief all at once. UTM

Certainly randomness is a good way to describe Wordle, plus the start word which obviously is important. The times I think I'll change my word but then panic and don't! Luck, luck, luck all the way in the end, and some of us have more than others.

Today, is a Birdy (lucky) day for me.

Pretty standard par 4. Happy and relieved to get the result after a bit of dithering after the second go.

Par is standard today although it was one of my 2 options on the 3rd guess and I went the wrong way. Am I the only player who doesn't have a starting word and goes with a different one every day based upon a whim?

I have 2 starting words depends how I feel when deciding which one to use but both have yeilded good results. You should find yourself a good starting word. Ocean is a good one!

I have ones that I use dependent upon how I feel but don't stick with them religiously. Ocean was one but I don't use it any more as it has been the actual Wordle so I know I can't get a hole in one with it. I still use it on Quordle though. Anise is one of my favourites, 3 vowels and 2 common consonants. I work on the misguided premise that they won't use the same letters today as they did yesterday but as I say that's as misguided as Gru not picking lottery numbers this week because they were drawn out last week
