    re: After 13 games!

The least inaccurate way of comparing performance between teams and from one year to another is by looking at the final position in the league table. There are just far too many variables otherwise. For example, we drew with Millwall this year but lost last year. To say we have improved because of this, every player for Millwall would have to have played in both games, all their players would have to be in the same form, with the same motivation etc etc. Its just statistical rubbish and Rattys taking us all for mugs! We're top and going up.

I agree it's impossible to compare, but using that reasoning you couldn't say we have improved under McClaren (don't worry, I know we have!) because every team McClaren has faced that Clough faced have had different players, different motivation, different form like you mentioned...

I've seen nothing to prove that most of what you have posted is even half way to being correct and as always your tendency to imply that your some sort of genius and the rest of us morons because we don't accept your "facts", coupled with examples of personal abuse when posters on here don't accept your prejudiced agenda, just goes to show that you are clearly not on the same planet as most r

Your absolutely right. The best benchmark that you can use is final league position because that cancels out more of the variables than any other method. Suppose that's why it's used to decide promotion and relegation!

Having looked at the data 'this vs last' season results:

FACT : we cannot make any 'like for like' assessment of performance vs opposition higher than 6th as so far this season as we haven't got any data to compare

FACTS : comparing results vs teams positioned 6th or lower:

    This year won 7 from 13 (54% win ratio) vs 4 from 10 (40% win ratio) = 14% improvement

This year Points 26 from 13 (2 pts per game) vs 16 from 10 (1.6 pts per game) = 25% improvement

This year Average opposition position 14th last year 13th

For me this data shows so far this year playing comparable teams we are showing an improvement vs last year, however we are yet to see how this improvement translates when we face the top of the table sides - we will only understand this in the coming months, and understand if we have improved enough to consider ourselves a realistic challenger for automatic vs playoffs.

In summary great season - top of the league - and cannot wait until we pl

[quote="Rattea"]Heres a stat ...50% of people are below average intelligence ... I think this thread proved it. He doesnt say what we want him to lets vote him out burn him at the stake. Should I expect a lynch mob shortly.

Only a fool would jump in at a quarter point of a season proclaiming to be correct. Some would even try and argue an IQ in the 130's is high. Each to their own but both these points are flawed.

As we are dealing with a very mixed bag here lets use theree simple colours Red, Yellow and Green. If we use Red a loss, Green a win ... and if you cant work out what yellow would be please stop reading now and carray on licking the window

Take a look at the pretty colours and compare ...

OK using the CURRENT (rapid this will change as the season goes on) position vs final positions last year. Then an overall grid of results last year. and finally an average of positions in the leag

What hasn't been taken into consideration is that if Blackburn, Ipswich and Bournemouth had beaten us they would all be either in the top 6 or at least joint points with 6th place. Cardiff would also only be 1 point off the top 6.
The point I am trying to make is that because we have taken points off these teams we have prevented them from being higher in the league.
I'm thick, so this probably doesn't make sense to anyone else!

    So Rattea

I enjoyed looking at your table, and I like the information it gives us.

so, if I read it right, this season, on a like for like basis of the teams we have played so far, we are 3 points ahead of last year?

So that "could" suggest we have improved not significantly, but a tangible improvement non the less.

I don't hold with the average league position, as that feels like averaging a percentage, which is statistically wrong.

    To Me -
Perception is we have improved as a club
the Team is pretty much same as last year, with the obvious minor changes
Points are by your own workings, above ...

so ... An Improvement for sure
