Here's a question for you now. Of all the Chinese, Japanese friends of yours, of which I assume there are many, do they (each and every one of them) appreciate it when you refer to them as 'chinky'?[/quote]

I bet the Japanese ones don't!!

It's like referring to all people from the sub continent as "Paki's" I know for a fact that Indian people find it very offensive as they hate Paki's as well

    Sorry I couldn't resist

Ps I am not a racist honest

Fanlight - I actually agree with you that there have been some ridiculous re-namings. I just don't think the Asian elephant is a case in point.
I also know what you mean about "perverted tolerance" (although I'm uneasy with the phrase) if you mean going to ludicrous lengths to avoid certain words.
However, I also think that justifying the "old" way of saying things by claiming that long usage makes it OK - and then suggesting that any change is "PC" - is worse.
My mum worked on a fish-stall in a market. All the West Indian customers came to her stall because they knew she would treat them as people - not as

Spot on Dan, I don't class myself as a racist all these so called offensive words are simply colloquialisms that I've grown up with and have no particular sinister or double meanings attached to them, So having said that I WILL definitely be going to the Paki shop in the morning for my milk and bread and possibly the Chinky tomorrow night for our weekend takeaway (although it could be an Indian yet) notice I said Indian there

I said it out of respect for Indians Dan as I have heard Indian takeaways/restaurant's referred to as "Paki" takeaway's/restaurant's
