[quote="chris311080"]Clough had on average say £1m to spend on players a year. Much of his transfers were paid for by his own wealing and dealing whether that be more cost cutting in wages or selling a player on

£1m a year is peanuts in comparison to what most other managers spent.

Bryson was bought from the money raised selling commons
Keogh was bought from money raised by selling shackell
Russell was bought from money raised by selling brayford
Barker was bought from money raised by selling Tito villa

Now apart from the players clough sold to buy his own team tell me how much extra he spent and divide that over his 5 years in charge and you will see he really didn't spend much at all

Mclaren has spent £3.5m on transfer fees in a year (Thorne £3.2m & £300,000 Christie) with no transfer fees coming in. That's a deficit of £3.5m.. Did clough have that deficit in total on fees over the 5 years.. Just a thought

Are we now seeing that progress does indeed c

Thorne surely wasnt £3.5m was he????

I would be amazed if we paid over £2m for him - and that isnt to diss the guy, I think he will be an amazing player. I just dont think DCFC are in the business of paying that size of transfer fee whilst in this division

At a fans Forum earlier this year, Sam Rush stated that the George Thorne transfer was very close to the club record, which I believe stands at 3.5 million. So approx 3.0 million seems correct.

It amazes me that the Clough v Mclaren debate still rages.
Clough did a good job steadying the ship and took us as far as he could.
Mclaren has taken us to the next level.
Whilst Clough was here crowds were dwindling, freebie tickets were common so obviously income was down along with interest. I dread to think what the season ticket sales would of dropped to for this season with a mid table finish and boring Clough football still on offer at the Ipro. Certainly not 21000 that is currently

Did Sam really say that? I follow the feedback on those forums quite closely, and have to admit I missed that comment if the case

Can anyone verify this? Someone on here must have been present

Where does it say we paid £3.5m for thorne??

I didn't say all cloughs signings were made on money he had bought in himself I said a lot of it was. You had stated that clough had been given good resources by the club

That's what I'm arguing. Clough inherited a club on its **** with no players of any real value. He built the club back up on a very limited budget. Simples!!

Your comment about Bryson was wrong, simples!

I wish Clough well at Sheff Utd but he will be just a footnote in Derby's history.

Only if your too stubborn to admit what an influence his work had on the development and creation of our current squad and how is hard work behind the scenes halted the crumbling foundations left behind by paul jewell

As I've said before, I recognise the work Clough did, I remain of the opinion that a better manager would have done the same in half the time, thats my opinion theres no mileage ina rguing..

There was asuggestion in your previous post about the money spent on Thorne and other players acquired which implied that McClaren had had more money, whereas my point that up until the end of last season he'd taken Cloughs squad and with the same resources had achieved 3rd place.

Its seems that there is more funds available this season, based on the fact that we are more successful and presumably the additional revenue thats been generated.

I for one am impressed not by the pR and hype as some ahve said, but the reality w
