Oddly enough Given also did this and Harper diddn't but you always got the impression Given was looked upon as No1.

My own opinion was that going on everything a top goalie needs all round Harper ticked more boxes than than Given.

Given wasn’t a good keeper and got found out very soon at City for me Harper was better than Given

Comes accross as a nice lad. Bit immature on the telly, but a decent lad.

Has done well so far but of I was to nit pick I think his lack of height will cost England. A taller keeper would have stopped the Belgium goal and held that shot that led to the corner that led to the goal against Columbia.

Good luck to him though.

He got fingers on it. Another couple of inches in height he might have got a full hand on it and brought it down. We will never know - but I take your point, maybe I stand corrected. A good jump and save and maybe I am nit picking.

And Given is about the same height as Pickford as was also Steve Harper. Goalies of that height have to make up for this by being more alert, quicker at positioning and quicker speed of reaction.

I know well from experience as I played in goal for several teams in my youth but unfortunately for me stopped growing at the age of 15, then being only just over 5'8". My two lads both made up for it though having good school and college careers both at 6'2".

Willie McFaul was exceptional though being under 5'9" which even then was increadibly small for a goalie. Just shows what a difference agility, speed of reaction and positioning make to a good G.K. As TerryMac will confirm.
