    OK thanks Mike.
I seem to recall there was a distinct hops smell in the air around the bottom of Ecclesall road and also by the River Don heading towards Attercliffe.
Do you know if they both Stones Breweries perhaps just in a different part of town?
I always assumed one was Stones and the other Magnet

Ecclesall Road was WARDS where Sean Bean worked as the star character in the film 'When Saturday Comes'. The Stones brewery was on Barnsley Road? - just beyond Kelham Island Museum. Both had aromatic brewing days. The 'Whitbread' MAGNET was a Nottingham beer wasn't it?

    PS: The Nottingham Brewery:

"The original brewery had closed in 1952 after being taken over by Tennant Brothers who in turn were bought out by Whitbread. In Witbread's subsequent takeover by Interbrew the names were no longer owned by any brewing company"

"Tadcaster" was Sam & John Smiths - more or less the whole village. Magnet was brewed in Nottingham - at Whitbread brewery until 'INTERBREW' took over the world.

Yes - good call but not the one I was thinking about. God the stuff we supped. Volume drinking was the way of my world then with whisky chases. But not this shot nonsense.

Possibly thinking of Whitbread Queens ale, brewed for a while in Sheffield City centre/Wicker area.
The Wards brewery was fairly close to Bramhall Lane, so Sean Bean may well have visited it

Yes it was Gold Label, technically a barley wine, initially brewed by Tennants in Sheffield who were later acquired by Whitbread.

It was the record holder for a few years in the highest alcohol level in a readily available beer. It’s strength varied over the years reaching its peak in the Whitbread years at 11.44 abv. Real headache stuff.

Stones Brewery is/was in Neepsend Sheffield, it closed on or around 1999/2000.

The shell of the building is still there. Stones called the site the Cannon brewery, hence the cannon on their badge.

That area of Sheffield is having a bit of a revival with some new real ale outlets and eateries opening up. Worth a visit if you like that sort of night out.
