Since 1970, we've always been two years away from a winning team. We still are. Good as this team is, it's no better than the ones in 1970, 1982, 1990 or 1996.

I think the 1970's world cup team in comparison to the era, was way better than anything we've had since, world cup or euro's teams, and had Alf Ramsey not taken Bobby Charlton off when we were beating West Germany 2-0 in quarter final, to rest him a bit for the semi final, which backfired spectacularly and allowed the Germans to come back and win 3-2, we may well have had 2 world cup wins to our name. True but hindsight is a wonderful thing, unlike Peter Bonnetti on the day. And we did seem to be coasting at 2-0. Will we ever be coasting at 2-0 and faced with a similar decision with this lot?

It is a little confusing. All I've seen is winners playing runners up, as per. So who plays the 3rd teams? Can't be other 3rd places, would have thought it would be winners but if we win we get a runner up. Idk.

Positive in that he is crafty, can create and unlock as you say but one of his strengths can be an issue. He gets fouled so much, so good at drawing them that it ends up slowing the game down as he is fouled for the 20th time on the half turn on the halfway line. England are so very slow already. I agree he should be playing though.

Winners of Groups B,C,E and F all play one of the 4 3rd placed teams but which ones depends on where those 4 come from so no games in the last 16 will be a repeat of any game already played e.g. Netherland have won group C but can't play Ukraine or Austria if either of them make it through as a 3rd placed team.
