I have moved from glass half empty to glass half full, Blackburn were a good side and one of the best I have seen this season they will finish in the top 6, last night has shown Bruce precisely what the current issue at the club is, we have a random set of players who it is difficult to find a system to suit, was very clear last night that Carrol was isolated up front, hence and credit to Carrol he started coming deep, but that’s not his strength, our crossing choices were poor and wrong most of the time last night, on the ground when they should have been in the air and vice versa, that can be fixed, the big problem we face between now and when DK becomes available is who can play with Carrol in what looks like an obvious 4-4-2 formation..
Bruce is a realist, he’ll assess what he’s got and try and make the best of it, although in reality we look like a side of mid table ability about to wonder around in the Championship wasteland, not good enough to go up, not bad enough to go down.
Furlong obviously fancied a night on the sofa and sent in his far more gifted identical twin, at least in the first half anyway. Mowatt looked like something from the Dudley & Cradley League and Grant, well, what the fcuk was that Karlan? Sweating like a Dray Oss and blowing like a Whale, I’ve seen people walk a Bulldog faster, Reach is like the White lines on the turf, he was there, not doing much but just...there.
Clarke and Ajayi looked good in my opinion, Clarke nearly handed them a goal granted but overall I like him, I don’t understand some criticism I heard him getting at times. Ajayi can have the odd rik to his game but again, overall he looked strong and quick. Carroll did well in attack and was excellent at defending corners, obviously Bruce picked up on the fact Blackburn are a big side and Carroll made at least three headed clearances in the six yard area on corners.
I noticed the Blackburn 27 and 8 who patrolled in front of their back four were much more dynamic than our equivalent in Mulumby and Mowatt, they often burst forward and boosted numbers in attack, both good with, and without the ball, by comparison our midfield is desperately lacking.
Because Ishmael wasn’t relieved of his duties three weeks earlier as Lai obviously didn’t want to provide Bruce with funds to buy anyone, we’re stuck with what we have. I think we have a good enough manager for the kind of club/team we are right now, I’m backing the lad to the max, let’s see what the coming weeks bring in terms of experimental formations while Brucy tries to sort out which is Draper and which is Makita out of the ‘tools’ the poor bugger’s inherited.
You just never know, if anyone can I reckon Brucy can.
All roads lead to Lai.
