I still have a go on the Euros and Lotto but no where near gru’s spending. It’s all done in the hope that maybe maybe I just might get lucky one day and afford others and myself a better lifestyle, not that my current one is uncomfortable.

You weren't good though were you? It wouldn't have had to go if you were good and consistently making a profit.

Again, the lottery is not a challenge, it takes no skill whatsoever, it's pure luck.

When the lottery first started, I owned a shop with a lottery machine. An old guy from across the road had been doing his homework and came to the conclusion that higher numbers were more likely to come out because there was more paint on the ball making them heavier. He also read that syndicates rather than private individuals were more likly to win. so he formed a sydicate with his next door neighbour so that, rather than him putting £1 per week on, his syndicate put £2 per week on.

Talking of grus 'system', you pick numbers that haven't been out often. Do the balls have a memory? I once had a conversation with a guy who considered himself to be a switched on businessman, which he wasn't. An example being sitting outside a pub one warm sunny day with a wasp buzzing around, I rolled a newspaper up to swat it. The guy said don't kill it, they make honey. I explained that bees and not wasps produce honey. He asked me how you told the difference between a bee and wasp, and I had to show him photos on my phone.

I once spoke to him about statistics and I aked him if you toss a coin in the air what was the chance of it coming down heads. He correctly said evens. I said if I toss a coin 10 times and it comes down heads 10 times, what are the chances of it coming down heads the 11th time. He decided that there was no chance. I explained to him the odds were still even since the coin didn't have a memory. He told me that I was stupid and walked away. LOL.

When your gambling on the horses like I was you've got to be prepared to lose. Losing to me was taking money away that could be spent more wisely. When I was working I didn't think that way. Had to pack up. If I won big on the lotto there's people I would help. Like Brin I'm comfortably off. I don't do.any other lotto like Euro Irish.

You'd be a lot more comfortably off if you hadn't been p*ssing 68 quid a week up the wall most weeks for god knows how many years!

Your odds of winning would barely be any worse if you had one go a week and you'd have another £66 in your pocket, but if you're happy with that crack on. Just don't call yourself a reformed gambler while mocking people for having sensible bets for a bit of fun.

I do find it amusing and sad at the same time to see pensioners in my local shop queueing to pay their lottery tax. That's what it is gru. A tax on the vulnerable.

It's amazing how many people are absolutely clueless about probability. I've lost count of the times over the years I've argued with people who supposedly "have a system" to win the lottery. If you're going to have a go, you may as well just plump for lucky dips every time rather than waste your time "devising a system" or mulling over "lucky numbers".

The odds of actually winning suggest you'd be better off keeping your money in your pocket anyway. It's a strange quirk of the human condition that we all "feel lucky" when buying our lottery ticket but we'd never in a million years expect to be struck by lightning. Very quirky when you're 139 times more likely to be struck by lightning than win the euromillions!

Funnily enough I know someone who’s been struck by lightning (I live in the lightning capital of the world)
A neighbour on our old street was a big pools winner.
I know a bloke from Rotherham that’s a big lottery winner (millions)
I also know a working men’s club syndicate than won a life changing amount each.
    Funny old world.

In exactly the same way that an alchoholic would choose to spend their income on alchohol. It's his or her choice.
