If you choose to do that, it’s more than a bit unrealistic for you to expect that nobody should comment upon what you said.
You told us that your father and stepmother used their winter fuel allowance for green fees. I’m not criticising them for that – if the government gave me money that I didn’t need for fuel, I’d spend it on something else too. But it goes to the heart of the issue under discussion, doesn’t it? Should the state give people spending money, or should it support people who need support? For me, it’s the latter. If we disagree on that, then fair enough.
Consider this. Universal Credit is a UK benefit that is available to support low-income households. I could apply for it right now if I wished to and it would be refused almost as quickly because I am financially ineligible for it – the government has set rules to ensure that it goes to people who need it, not people like me who don’t need it. And that is exactly what is happening with the winter fuel allowance.
As you feel that I am putting words into your mouth – what do you think - do you think it fair that working people - some of whom will be low earners and perhaps struggling to bring up a family - should subsidise your father and stepmother’s golfing through their taxes? It’s a question that calls for a yes or no answer. You know my views, I'm interested in yours.
