McLean and Fergie were both driven by perceived injustices at former clubs. Fergie won leagues and cups in Scotland then moved onto bigger things. McLean stayed put and won nothing more after 83, as United never had another final/decider at Dens after that. Some legacy.

Yet it ranks as one of the best legacies outside the Old Firm since the 70s. Granted it could have and should have been much greater.

Whether or not this led to him being considered/not considered by the Dees Board I do not know. I was told by a key player in the Dens team at that time to 'watch United go!' after Wee Jim was appointed manager at Tannadice.

I have no hesitation in concluding that but for the Dees Board at that time and its relationship with Wee Jim, the ensuing successes at Tannadice would have been your successes. In pure fitba parlance...'Yous wiz robbed!' It would have happened sooner at Dens too. You had the players and style of play to make it all happen. You shot yourselves in the foot.

And yes, John Prentice was a gentleman and a loss to Dundee FC too. Selling tartan in Canada or managing the Dees? That was his choice.
Happy enuf to take a wage as player and coach but not manager that would have been strange morals.

He was never asked so it's very easy to turn something down when you haven been asked.

My opinion of him is obviously completely different from yours and whilst acknowledging his tactical nous made him one of the top managers in the country for a short period and the most consistent over a much much longer period I don't feel he's a person that shud be revered.

You can guess em no really keen on him.😁

You have a valid point. Having watched most of United's Cup Finals since 1974 (most of which occurred during the McLean era), I am of the opinion that they threw away more games than they deservedly lost. More than once I heard feedback along the lines of 'fear of losing' and 'fear of McLean' given as contributory factors. He was a nut job, don't doubt that, but then so too was Fergie. In this world the best of people (all rounders) don't usually achieve great things. It's the people who are hated as much as they are loved who often bring about great things. Like a football pitch. There are two halves. I respect McLean for the great times he brought to the Shed, but am not deaf to his faults.

It's a legacy of failing to achieve anything which didn't involve getting it up the big team. If you think about it that way, I think your mind will be at rest as to who the real wee team are.
