“There’s no way we can stand still because if we do then we’ll move backwards. That’s something I don’t want to happen.”

This was Wider’s most telling comment from the interview in my opinion. He’s spot on of course, but also it gives me some hope that he’ll stay around to try and make sure that it doesn’t happen.

i think his comment that nobody is saying anything was a gee up to the 2 parties to get their act together sharpish hes trying to force the issue himself personally i dont think he will go and i dont think he wants to go but chris likes to get things done early and all this uncertainty on ownership can only hamper his summer recruitment drive

Once you get the fixed costs and wages paid, then everything else is a judgement on risk. Any penny that you spend, is a penny that you could have kept in the kitty to pay a bill another time, especially if you are loss making already.

The whole thing hinges on the Coutts injury for me. Flying before it, our form suddenly evaporated and the prediction of all football, that we'd start well and fade away, is looming large. I understand that Wilder's January budget was agreed in the Autumn when we were doing well and frankly £3-4m on the right two players would have had us in play-offs. But here we are in December, 1 win in 9, needing to replace Coutts, AND get the extra quality out of the same budget.

So, we've lost our key player (and Freeman, and Brooks), our form is terrible, Wolves are already away in the top spot, so we are playing for one automatic slot, which it looks like Cardiff, Fulham or Villa will be in, and then there's the play-offs, which we're likely to be coming into at the end of a long season, without a lot of form, against deeper and better squads. Is it impossible? Of course not. But where does it lie on the risk scale? We have a straight choice between increasing the budget in the hope that we can find the players to regain our form, or accept that this is probably not our time and to stop chasing something that, on the balance of probability, isn't going to happen.

Now, if I own the club, do I want to stick another £3m in if my opinion is that it is not likely that it will result in our promotion? Its not a 'no-brainer' that we should, because we're close and the prize is huge. If Coutts is still on two legs, Freeman and Brooks are fit and playing well, and we're still picking up 2 points a game then its a different decision entirely, but it isn't. That's where we were. So should we hold back for the summer and mount a better campaign next year? (Although I have no evidence I wonder if this is the source of the 'Kev wanted to stick cash in, HRH didn't' rumour..?).

The biggest lesson I have from business is 'you can only spend money once', and you have to be really, really honest with yourself about risks. I understand the argument about ambition. I can see the prize. Everyone can see the prize, that's why there are ten teams in the league who have spent £30m plus, and seven of them are going home with nowt for all the cash they spent. But as I think I said recently, I'm much more risk-averse when its my money.
    Good post FKB.

In my own experience, I think there’s need a good mix of guardians and ‘go for its’ in the company boardroom if they are to succeed and football is no difffernt.

The guardian types often procrastinate too long policing the pennies and can slow the process down missing serious opportunities, whereas often the ‘go for its’ can jump in feet first and spend money like confetti. It’s the balance between stagnation and boom or bust.

I think that our current problem is that there’s little or no appetite for going for anything Wilder obviously apart.

nobody said mcabe wants to put money in, macabe had to cause prince bog roll got the huff on and said he aint putting owt in cause wilder wouldnt do what the prince wanted,it dosnt matter what your not buying , the truth is, wilder will not go down the foreign route, the prince wont put owt in until he does. the prince then triggerd the buy clause, so that he owns the club then wilder either does as hes told or he,ll get the bullit. mcabe phucked the prince of cause he dosnt want wilder to be sacked. and the person wasnt sh... it stirring at all its exactly what wilders saying himself. its all down to whos got the legal wright to own the club,if its the prince bog roll wilder goes. if its macabe wilder stays.

if the prince bog roll gets control wilder will either do as hes told be sacked or walk. unless the prince changes his mind of course. suppose the fans demonstrating and everything else about bog roll phoney he could change his mind,or wilder thawing out a little on foreigners ,we,ll just have to wait and see, only this idiotic situation could happen at our club lol.

Its been well documented that Kevin McCabe triggered the buy out clause. CW said on Saturday he has no problems with either owner he just wants them to get on with getting the matter settled. I doubt very much Chris Wilder will be making adverse comments about one of the owners to so called mates. As Carpe Diem says CW's mates got form for stirring he needs to do CW a favour and keep quiet.

so called mate ya mean his best man at his wedding his life long friend ,your tellin me wilder dosnt tell him absolutely everything. their best mates. the prince wanted foreign players wilder didnt the prince then said well im not gonna give any money. its as simple as that. wilder wants the situation sorting so he can make a decision on his own future whether to stay or go as soon as he knows what hes got to work with its as simple as that.

If I had a best mate who leaked absolutely everything I ever said to all and sundry he wouldn't be my best mate for very long, is all I'm saying.
