I think it’s shocking anyone should have to pay for care at an older age, and give up everything they have paid for through out their working life, the part I’m getting at is freebies should be there for folk that need them, I work with boys who have free bus passes, and I know what they earn, I just don’t think it’s right

It’s also wrong that someone who hasn’t done a days work gets a bigger government pension than those that have worked all their lives to pay for the pension just because they also paid out of their wages for a private pension

    Why not.
A 60 year old person who has not worked a day in their life and lived off the ‘social’ is also entitled to a free bus pass.
The 60 year old person who has been in full time employment throughout their working life has paid their taxes to pay for the Scottish Government National Entitlement Card (bus pass) which is paid for by the money the Scottish Government receives from the Westminster Government under the rules of the Barnett Formula.

And there you have it. A sense of entitlement is enshrined in society.

Blame Alex Salmond. He was the First Minister when the National Entitlement Card scheme was introduced.
It could have easily been called ‘Free national bus pass’.

I don’t think 60 year old should have a free bus pass

Where this is going barmy notso is everyone is becoming entitled .......like my free central heating system .....I honestly could afford my own......but I'm not gonna pay if someone else is.

I agree there should be no punishment for aspiration, aspiration is good and shouldn't be punished.....but we have to move away from entitlement........and we will given what we have spent on COVID.

It's like council tax, why should you buying and paying for a bigger house cost you more than someone who uses more water, has more bodies in the house, more bins to empty.

That is why the Community Charge was a perfect system to pay for local authority services.
However people with 4 wages coming into a house would rather pay the same local taxes (rates, now called council tax) as a widow living on her own in the same size of house.
I would scrap Council Tax and bring in a local sales tax. That would mean people who have more money to spend would contribute more money through a local sales tax than a poorer person.
Holiday makers travelling to stay on a Scottish island such as Islay would contribute to the cost of local authority services through a local sales tax whereas as present the local hotels, guest houses and people who rent out their self catering properties get all the benefits while the local council taxpayer pays for the cost of extra damage to the roads and the uplift of more litter lying about.
Don’t get me started about the Scottish Government ‘flagship’ Small Business Bonus Scheme which is ultimately paid for by everyone throughout Scotland including Dundee and is abused by some people on Islay.
A local sales tax would also stop all the parasites who live in Monifieth, Carnoustie, Birkhill, Invergowrie, Newport, Tayport and Wormit coming to Dundee to do their shopping in Tesco and Asda whilst paying a lower Council Tax living in Angus, Perthshire and Fife.

My father also received a new free central heating system because he was aged over 70. From memory the deal was a new Combi gas fired boiler which is fine as long as there are no long power cuts and 6 radiators. My father had to pay for the extra radiator he required for all the rooms in his house. He also received free loft insulation. He already had loft insulation but this was ripped out and replaced with new thicker insulation.
However the combi boiler is not the best on the market and my father was subsequently told by a heating engineer that the radiators were not the best.
This does not surprise as you get what you pay for and no doubt the Government department running this scheme ‘did a deal’ to get the boiler and radiators at the lowest cost whilst the Government gets the maximum publicity for the scheme.
