Don't worry I said I'd never contribute here again and I won't. However someone needs to add context.
    Did he tell you that?
If true then all the best to his mother but why didn’t he just say he’s got family issues instead of ‘The reasons are obviously personal to me but I can’t say to anyone,’

Like I’ve said time and time again, we can only go on what we see/hear.
Fans that always supported him would’ve understood that and wished him well

Maybe he's just a private bloke who doesn't want to share the contents of his private life with all and sundry? He has that right and I think a lot of people would sympathise with that if they took a deep breath and thought about it for a moment.

I don't know the reasons for him wanting away, which is why I won't criticise the bloke He chipped in some important goals and played a part in this successful season. Can't we just be grateful for that and wish him well rather than behaving like jilted lovers?

He doesn’t need to tell us his life story, just stating he has family issues is enough and we wish him well.

Irrespective of the reason I still think PW was right to drop him from the squad for the last few games and think towards the future by including players who are likely to be here next season apart from the obvious leavers. A little more detail from the outset in January could have saved all the vitriol too.

"Fans on here would have understood ".
Some might, many certainly wouldn't, the locals don't like any sign of 'weakness'.

That maybe true but it’s only a minority imo which only gets highlighted because some only comment to negatively.

Fans until recently have been behind him even when he wasn’t playing so just letting them know he had family issued might have helped with understanding to which they would’ve supported him instead of abusing him.

Warney hasn’t played him and he didn’t even know if he was at NYS or not. How’s that look to fans?

If its because his mother is ill then understandable to not be at NYS oe Sunderland. But if he was with his mother in Romford how long would it take to drive to Gillingham to spend an hour with his work colleagues celebrating the success that he has been a part of. But he didn't.

Possibility his Mum is more I’ll than is known and he had to be with her so couldn’t be with the team?
    Understandable if under those circumstances.

Kerr, do you think that may also explain his under performances when brought back into the fold following his transfer request?

Yes he chipped in quite considerably with his goals and I’m sure others like myself, thank him for that but, it’s still a bizarre way to try to establish a move elsewhere don’t you think?
Why didn’t he ask the club to quietly put the feelers out to southern clubs to assist his needs?

The rumours of a bust up in the changing room may only be speculation but if true, now there’s a brotherly bond that was broken that may have well never got mended.

My take is that a professional footballer, especially one playing for a deal at a new club, is unlikely to do anything other than work his hardest to play as well as possible. I would put it down to trying to find your rhythm after a period of not being in the side, something that affects most players coming back from injury, including Reg who finished our strongest player.

The only time I could imagine a footballer not trying their best is if a deal is already in the bag and they have been played against their will.

No idea what's happened behind the scenes with Freddie but it happens at all clubs, and if he has behaved poorly, word will get around to buyers. In the meantime, thanks for the goals and his part in our recent memories.
