I don't mind getting into a bit debate about the ins and oots but if your argument is that nuclear fallout is less lethal to rare and endangered bird and bat species than wind or hydro then there's no much point even trying to debate with you. I think I'd rather my een were a wee bit sore than burnt oot at another Chernobyl.

Nuclear fallout? We're talking about nuclear power generation not WW3.

I don't for one minute Deeranged is talking about nuclear fallout as something to be ignored. It is interesting that nuclear power plants can be sited in France just across the Channel, a distance approximately the same as from here to Perth, without any possible complaint from English authorities. I think we need nuclear power rather than wind power, but it requires much greater safety procedures to be in place.

There are risks associated with all types of power production. The Chernobyl incident has ingrained fear into the population however the truth is that the type of reactor that blew was a very unusual one and would not now be installed in any western state - don't think even North Korea would be reckless enough to build one, although I probably wouldn't bet against it.

Nuclear power production is one of the safest and probably most reliable forms of power generation. Talk of meltdowns and fallout is absolutely bat**** crazy.

Describing something as a no brainer indicates to me that all other options are off the table including the risks.

I hadn't actually mentioned relative risks at that point. Of course nuclear has risks; as does wind; as does tidal; as does hydro, in fact statistically hydro is the least safe form of generation, then wind then nuclear. Oil and gas suffers in that measure due to carbon emission levels.

Would like to know if wind power is some temporary fix? It seems so inconsistent and incapable of providing enough power that it seems to me it is a waste of money. Can just see Scotland having been green washed to believe that wind power will work for us, the game changes and we are completely out on a limb. No manufacturing plants in Scotland, to replace the turbines when they wear out and the Chinese are onto the system that will replace wind turbines.

Thanks The AuldYin. Had a look online and discovered a video about the re turbining of Scotland's oldest wind farm. 3 new efficient turbines will be able to generate the same power as the original 20 odd.
Wonder if there is something in this. Why did they not replace them all with modern ones and increase the out put 7 times? Is the limitation the load that the connecting cables can carry? Should they be putting in much heavier spec cables in anticipation that technology will improve the output achievable by the turbines?

I'll ask the question. I do a fair bit of sea fishing a lot of it in the dark in Winter and just 10-15 years ago we used to wear headlamps that were powered by 6V motorbike batteries that we carried in a kidney bag in a belt round our waist, for a decent length of sesh we carried 2 or 3 spare batteries plus a petrol Tilly lamp that we set up, see now 3 triple A,s will light up the beach all night thanks to LED's. I'm also a joiner and 10 years ago I was doing a loft extension and there was 14 downlighters in it and the sparky pointed out to me that the lights alone were drawing more than a kettle, now that's LED's and drawing nothing. Thing's are changing rapidly.
