O/T Why is Rotherham's fan base (weekly average) below 10k?

Just come on the site now and read this lot, can't for the life of me find how shires comment of "no thanks " is racist. Talk about blowing things out of proportion ! If asians want to come to watch football then they will. Nothing stopping them. Unfortunately i will probably be classed as racist for defending shires words. Comes to the stage where you have to clearly watch what your saying. Being accused of being racist is becoming very easy lately. Ie Jeremy Clarkson slope argument. Lighten up and accept that shire isn't a racist.

If Shire's comments are representative of a significant group of fans then its not surprising that attendances are not better.

Unfortunately it is a sport that seems to attract a significant percentage of the underclass at the same time leisure activities generally are becoming more sophisticated and upmarket because they have to.

Swearing, bad behaviour, heavy drinking and racist comments are common at Rotherham games so its




hardly surprising that it is difficult to attract new customers.

As a club Rotherham are certainly trying to move forwards and get with the times more but will be held back by the knuckle draggers.

Back to this particular racist comment by shire[not the first to my memory]...what a shame that its tolerated on the board when lesser things are not.

Bringing the thread back on track, I think the Millers gates hold up very well indeed, given the demographics.

Rotherham is smack in the middle of 4 clubs with far bigger potential fan bases on their outer edges I.e. Donny to Scunny and Hull, Barnsley to Huddersfield and Leeds. The Two Sheff clubs have a huge fan base.
The Millers have a far smaller fan base and irrespective of the population.

The Bournemouth and Poole conurbation as a population of over 300k with the nearest clubs being Saints 35 miles away and Yeovil 40 miles away. The Cherries home gates have increased this season in the main due to increased away followings in the Championship, other than that their ave gate is similar to the Millers.

Slowly, slowly catchee fan base after years in the doldrums.

Flip the argument on its head. We are one of the best supported sides in the lower two divisions, and it's not cheap like it is for Bradford as an example.

You'd be pushed to find many clubs in Europe that are in their respective leagues' third tier and average over 8,000 people.

Can we do more? Yes. Ar we doing well? Yes.

I'm sure Tony Stewart was budgeting on a base of crowds of 5,500. That's not to say we were sustainable with those figures, but that's the level he was expecting to underwrite in the short term.

I suspect he's pleased with our crowds, although our crowd vs Bristol was indeed a poor one.
