    1. We start the new season exactly as we did this (only 23 clubs in League 2).
    2. If the EFL want the full complement of 72 clubs they only relegate one meaning we stay up.

Unfortunately, the first option is probably the easiest and fairest.
If the NL season is expunged then Barrow have got as much claim to promotion as Chorley. If at least part of the next season is to be played in front of paying spectators then I'd be very confident L2 clubs won't be wanting to sit out any weekends because there's an odd number of teams, they'll want 24 for maximum income.
Maybe expunging the 2019/20 season will strengthen our case.

That's what I was thinking. If this season didn't happen, every club starts again in the same place. The fly in the ointment is Bury going bust, and the only two options would be to start League 2 without them or replace them with us. As you say, that would apply whether we were currently standing 10 points in front of Barrow or 10 points behind Chorley.

What do you base our case on?

Our case would be based on this season not happening. Then it would be up to the EFL to continue next season (whenever that is) one club short, or make up the numbers with us. If this season is disregarded completely, they are the only two options.

Two teams are supposed to drop out of the Football League each season. In 2019 three dropped out. As we finished above Yeovil and Bury completely imploded, we should still be in the Football League.

If we hadn't have been such a basket case last summer, I think there's a good chance we would have stayed up. Apparently we were put on standby but there was every chance then we were going the same way as Bury.

Interesting. Last week the talk on here was that the integrity of the league would be shot if they expunged this season. But now, if it suits us, it should be expunged?

ironically getting relegated to the NL probably saved Notts in the long term - could you have seen the previous owner selling up if you hadn't been relegated?

Good thread and good arguments from both sides. It just doesn’t look like this situation is going to go away any time soon, so the simplest thing for me is to promote Barrow. That’s based on the EFL wanting a return to 72 clubs, and the fact that Barrow have clearly been the best side so far this season, whatever may have happened in the remaining 9ish games.

The bigger situation is that we’ve got to hope as many clubs as possible survive, and that Notts will be in a great position to get back to the EFL on the basis of a full season, and in front of paying fans.

Where has this being put on standby come from?
