I was reading a thing about Brentford’s planning the other day - they’re assuming that they’re going to get relegated, basically. The strategy is to pocket the money, probably sell a couple of players who do well, and then reinvest some of that into the squad to come back up automatically. And then maybe go down again, but do the same thing until they establish themselves.
Then if they do stay up they’re well ahead of their planning and in an even better position.

Good strategy? If it comes off, most definitely. But there are huge risks (the assumption that you'll get back up) but probably safer than blowing a massive amount of cash on players and then being relegated.
I have heard (and said) it - at least if we go down, we will win more games next season and come back up.
Still waiting .........
Not sure it's as simple as that. The whole point is to highlight areas from dead ball situations where we can become more effective. That will be both attacking and defending corners, free kicks, throw-in's and goal kicks etc.
Imagine we are defending a corner. We have identified that we struggle to get the first ball but why is that? Is it positioning? Is it a lack of height or physicality? Have we analysed how the opposition attack corners and is there something we can do to negate their threat? And then if we still fail to win the first ball how do we defend the second? What if we win the first ball what do we do to turn that defensive play into an attacking threat?
I would imagine all of these things will be analysed, discussed and practiced in training to ensure it gives us an edge over our opponents.
Your opinion is a good one Matt. We are growing the club for the future, other teams have bought players maybe more along their development than the ones we have but with the right coaching and environment then they will hopefully end up being worth more and take us up the leagues. R and R will go if we don't go up but I think they feel a love for Notts that means that they will do all they can to make sure we win most of our games and this for me bodes well.
Sack all the coaching staff, footballers should all know how to play football to the peak of their potential. If they aren't good enough we can always sign better players as we have unlimited resources. Why waste time and money trying to develop our players? My post is almost as ridiculous as yours.
This thread had set me thinking. How much of football is innate ability, and how much is learned? Can all played be coached technically and improve by a similar percentage? So if you took with immense natural ability and someone with less natural ability but a willingness to learn, would they both improve by a similar amount? Does it depend on attitude, intelligence, desire?
In the end is nature (natural ability) what really counts, or can nurture (coaching) make up for deficiencies? And if so, by how much, and what limits it? Apologies for lots of questions, but it's a fascinating subject. Wonder if there are any papers on it.
