Apologies in advance for length of post and feel free to stop halfway through this waffle.
most successful teams will be littered with minimum 6 out of 10 solid performers, but they usually play 1 or 2 stardust players, those that can have magic moments that get the team points or through to the next round.
These stardust players are luxury players, they dont do it every game and arent expected to, as long as the solid guys turn up or one of them has an 8 or better, we should still get results albeit mostly draws.
I put Benji, Edwards, Butcher (when he plays CH), McCann, Mulgrew, Freeman, and at a push Smith in the solid category although at times you could argue Benji, Edwards and to a lesser extent Mulgrew have had stardust moments that have won us points.
Ross Graham has had a great start and even at this stage looks like he will be in the solid category. Fuchs was until he got his head turned.
Despite being a stardust signing, Watt has been a minimum 7 out of 10 possibly higher.
For me over the last god knows how many years, we have been lacking in solid consistent players throughout rest of midfield and up front, and as a result we have started too many so called stardust,
Shankland was a luxury we could afford but moved on after proving he could do it in championship but on the whole struggled in premier due to my last para.
Chambers, Appere had their moments but few and far between, they should hopefully benefit by starting more games elsewhere.
Niskanen is getting there and I feel its too early to judge. MacDonald is probably going to be in the solid category. Levitt should be but has contributed less and less lately. If these 3 click, things will look a lot better
Harkes & Clark have their 7 or 8 sometimes even 9 out of 10 moments in a game and to an extent you could argue including 1 or both in the starting line up, but the amount of time they both go AWOL and dont contribute causes debate as to whether they are a luxury we can afford, I feel having Harkes and Clark in the starting line up is fine if MacD, Niskanen and Levitt are solid 7 or better performers most games.
Sporle is on the brink but needs to bring consistency, dont get me started on the category McNulty belongs in.
I see the argument for Harkes as there are similarities to Stretch in how he plays, and maybe he can play his best game with MacD in midfield, I would argue if we could replace McNulty with a solid performer up front this would round the circle and provide better balance all round.
A Cifti type in his prime would be perfect imo, possibly even a Daly type.
We're not far away from playing a starting 11 in their best positions, probably only 1 or 2 signings.
Apologies again for length of post, rant over
Harkes is a very average player. If he signs a new contract, I'd imagine he'll be one of our higher earners. Is he worth that? Absolutely not. Could we do better for the money? We absolutely could. Could we do better regardless of the money. Yes. He doesn't dictate games like we need a guy in his position to do & that's part of the reason we struggle in an attacking sense.
I have a hunch he isn't going to sign anyway. If he really wanted to, he'd have done so by now instead of stalling/seeing what his options are. If he does sign, it'll be because his options are very limited.
