I don't think they've had any intention of persuading the better players, like Humphreys and Odoffin to stay.We have this foolish mode of practice, that allows good players to leave for nothing because we will not offer the market rate wages.Crazy economics from this clueless club. He's brought his mate SE in because no other manager would tolerate this.
It takes two to Tango. It quite clear to me that Odoffin has no intention of signing a new deal within the budget that RUFC can afford and that he thinks (or more already likely knows) that he will be earning a lot more money next year. Not everyone is as altruistic as Victor.
Unfortunately both have been with us through the Championship years so are probably already on more than we can offer them going forward given our current prognosis. As an owner I wouldn't be offering more than we can afford and as a player in my prime years I'd be looking to where I can maximize my income. Only one outcome in those circumstances I'm afraid.
Its an all too common pattern in football ! The players, agents are totally running the game ? Just look at Liverpool cant reach an agreement with Salah, Alexander Arnold and Van Dyke all out of contract this season ? Newcastle with 50,000 every home game having to sell players ? Man UTD cant afford to buy ISAAK ? A lot of people wearing blinkers think its just a Rotherham problem, its not !!
Its a ever increasing downwards spiral, a race to the bottom ? The clubs answer to this put season tickets up, put hospitality up, put mascot packages up, put refreshments up ! It cant keep happening until something goes POP ?
What we are reading about above is the complexities of running a football club. Its not an easy business. Rotherhams promotions to the Championship over recent years have been wonderful but they have also brough additional challenges, particularly in terms of player rentention and contracts following relegation.
Are we set up for success here? Probably not given our back office capabilities but, as others have commented above, TS cannot simply write blank cheques to keep the likes of Odoffin on the playing staff. Personally, I would sell him and Tiehi now and try and bring a couple of 100k into the budget. We could use that to bring in some younger potential. I would try and convince Humphries to stay but I sense that is also unlikely. So I would keep him and accept he leaves at the end of the season for nothing.
