I don't think the problem is buying from League 1. Its the standard of player. If you take a player who is on the fringe of a League 1 team then they are not going to be the same quality as a someone who is performing well at a club and highly rated. Motherwell have done very well in the English lower league markets. Good scouting and knowledge of players should help. Micky should know as well as anyone who the gems are we can realistically poach.

Don't think that's necessarily true. Strangely, I had noticed that Ben Henaghan who was also at Blackpool had become available and wondered if he might be a possibility. He had quite a successful season at Motherwell a couple of seasons ago, so don't think there would be a quality issue there . To an extent I am assuming now that both players are of similar quality, but your main point was the general quality of players in that division.

To be fair TTT, when I see a player from League 1 in England linked to us my initial reaction - they must be decent. But I never see them being the type of player we bring in and then sell on for millions etc. But every player is different, you never know.

With Shanks, Clark and Appere, we have three decent strikers in the 1st team squad.

Would far rather we concentrated on getting a good midfield creator signed. Especially one that can take a good free kick and has some goals in him. For example, a Barry Robson or Badger type player.
Your last paragraph especially. We have nothing in midfield that's collectively good enough for this league. Harkes is decent but he needs exactly what you describe alongside him

We need some more quality in the wide positions and defence but it is more in the mentality department i have my doubts about current players, we need the players (or new players) to beleive they are good enough and dont completely go off the boil for a period when we concede. If that was Celtic we were playing on Sat they would have ran riot in the 15-20 mins after the equaliser.
Admittedly only based on one game but I stand by my comments, we are as we stand nowhere near good enough.

Just to qualify that above, I'm not saying we need 5/6 players. Some of the existing players will improve a lot with the better coaching they'll get from MM but to become a cohesive unit that defends consistently well, holds the ball well in midfield and creates the chances for Shankland I would say we need 3, a CB, a creative mid and depending how he intends to play Bolton (winger/wide) maybe a second striker up alongside Shanks.

For what it's worth, Ipswich fans seem to think the centre half is a big clumsy liability and seem split on the striker.

i dont get exceited when linked to league 1 players, even if they are at big clubs like Ipswich and on 10k a week.
