I have heard (and said) it - at least if we go down, we will win more games next season and come back up.

    Still waiting .........
I guess the assumption is that the only risk is that they don’t get promoted from the Championship. They’ve earned huge amounts of money either way. For a club like Brentford they’re still in an amazing position.

The issue that Notts have is that we’re trying to do it while below our natural level. So finishing in the play-offs, playing nice football and selling a couple of players for big money isn’t going to be seen as a truly successful season without at least one, probably two, promotions first.

Does it depend on attitude, intelligence, desire?

In the end is nature (natural ability) what really counts, or can nurture (coaching) make up for deficiencies? And if so, by how much, and what limits it? Apologies for lots of questions, but it's a fascinating subject. Wonder if there are any papers on it.

That definitely raises a few questions Cher.

I suppose in the first instance if you are talking about professional footballers then you have to assume rightly or wrongly that they have a degree of technical ability. Some will always have more ability than others but then what are their key attributes? Are they fast like a whippet or built like a brick outhouse? Do they like having the ball at their feet or are they better just winning the ball and passing to someone more adept?

I don't think it is a clear nature v nurture situation as the conditions assessed will be very different for different players and even teams of players. That said I would always prefer to see someone with a lesser ability but an attitude to learn than someone with more ability who thinks he has nothing more to learn.
