Head coach Ian Burchnall today agreed to join Forest Green Rovers.
The recently-promoted League One side made a formal approach after Monday’s play-off eliminator defeat to Grimsby Town and, following internal discussions, we gave them permission to negotiate terms with Burchnall.
Those terms have today been agreed and the move has now been formalised.
A statement from our board of directors reads: “We would like to place on record our appreciation to Forest Green Rovers for the way they have conducted themselves throughout this process.
“The same applies to Ian, who departs with our very best wishes for the future.
“While it is of course disappointing to be losing a head coach of Ian’s calibre, we feel it pertinent to remind supporters that, while the head coach is clearly an important part of our structure, a change in personnel does not lead to a switch in overarching philosophy.
“Ian’s replacement, while no doubt having their own style and characteristics, will be tasked with building on the foundations we have laid over the last three seasons and operating in line with the club’s core values and beliefs.
“When we appointed Ian we had huge confidence in his ability as a coach and were always aware this day may come once his qualities became more apparent to other English clubs.
“As with players, we are constantly monitoring head coaches and managers who we feel may be of interest to us in the future.
“As a result we have a ready-made shortlist of exciting potential replacements, with whom we look forward to discussing the role in due course.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to assure supporters that today’s news does not hinder our player recruitment plans for the coming campaign.
“Negotiations are progressing well with a number of targets and we expect to bring you some good news on this front soon.”
With a new coach coming in will that mean yet another 5 year bloody plan starting from scratch...
You're right, I'm not a Notts Co supporter and I'm not laughing at you. You were a laughing stock during the Sven era and under Hardy, but since falling out of the league you're another fine football club who've sunk lower than you ever thought you would. There's nothing to laugh at you about now, just sympathy for your situation and best wishes that you're back in the league before too long.
A genuine question; are your Danish owners particularly frugal or just sensible? I backed you ante-post for the season just ended and you didn't seem to be a million miles away from succeeding.
I'll be taking a keen interest in FGR and see how Burchnall sets them up. That'll give us an indication of whether the owners insist o the way we play.
I honestly think he is a massive loss.
I've been saying it off and on for 20 years.... either Notts re-locate or Fword do. to opposite sides of the city, be that north-south or east-west with a gradual re-alignment of support over 20,30 years with Notts then offering more than just an opportunity to support an underdog or a cheaper match ticket, they literally become something Fword aren't, THE local team, not the lesser choice of two virtually on top of one another.
As we are, if Notts had any kind of success we'd most likely crash back down and end up on the brink yet again, that's basically been the pattern for 60 years now. Being nothing more than the underdog is a one way street to non-league oblivion and here we now are.
I think winning the Premier league, la liga and the German top division (though Bayern have won it for the last 10 years?) is slightly different to a club the size of Notts not winning the league when the last 3 have been won by the powerhouses of Barrow, Sutton and Stockport. I agree with Elite, a failed national league playoff campaign is not a decent season, its the bare minimum we should expect. He's gone now so we'll see who they get in but it'll be someone else from abroad who likes to play tippy tappy I believe.
