The invasion of Ukraine is going completely according to plan. Any day now the troop surge will allow Russia to march forward and claim a crushing victory. What's that? They're all dead? OK so the next surge then. Or perhaps the one after that. Definitely imminent Russian victory though. Any time now.

What is Russia's Wagner Group of mercenaries?

The clue's in the question isn't it. They're mercenaries. They might be working for you today, but tomorrow they might switch and work for someone else if the rewards offered are greater.

According to my favourite youtuber Konstantin Kisin, who has family in Ukraine, "Basically, for many years Putin has been funding a mercenary company called Wagner and using them for military operations in other countries, especially Syria and various African countries."

Again the answers are within the questions. Mercenary groups are primarily 'for' themselves, rather than 'for' or 'against' a particular cause or strategy. They are liable to go wherever the rewards for them look greatest, whatever form those rewards may take, and wherever they're being offered from. As such, you wouldn't want to put yourself in a position where your military strategy relies too heavily on their loyalty.

"During the course of the Ukraine War, there has been growing conflict between the Russian Ministry of Defence and the Wagner Group which has also been fighting in Ukraine. After taking Bakhmut, a city in Eastern Ukraine with heavy casualties, Wagner rotated to the rear. As they were withdrawing from the front they claimed that their path had been mined by Russian MoD forces. Bomb disposal engineers they sent to deal with this came under fire. Wagner returned fire and eventually detained a Russian army colonel who they beat up and recorded apologising.
The point is there has been a growing and increasingly kinetic conflict between a mercenary unit and the Russian MoD.
Last night Wagner claimed its positions had been attacked with air strikes launched by the Russian Ministry of Defence and in response began moving towards Moscow in order to "detain and execute" Defence Minister Shoigu and Head of the General Staff Gerasimov.
Vladimir Putin, who has not commented on this conflict for months has finally stepped up and declared this an armed mutiny. In the meantime, Wagner has seized control of a major city (Rostov-on-Don) and shot down several Russian MoD helicopters.
