Us older ones will remember when the 'New Stand' was built, a stand built with money we did not have and the rest, well, we all know what happened not long after.Originally Posted by Woking88

Anyone remember the smell of The North Bank?![]()

Yup P1SS, Beer, Fag smoke and Bovril and by the time I was going in there regular, Cossack and Brut 33!!
1877, your question about whether the John Ireland stand was the biggest in the country at the time, aroused my curiosity. I immediately thought about the East Stand at Chelsea.
There may have been bigger than that Chelsea stand at the time, but I am not aware of a new stand that matched it's capacity.
The John Ireland/Steve Bull stand was opened on 25 August 1979 for the League match against Ipswich. Capacity was 9,348 with 24 executive boxes. The East stand at Chelsea was opened for the 1974-75 season and had a capacity of 19,104.
Having been in both of them, almost at the beginning of their term, I thought they were both absolutely huge and didn't, until now, realise how much difference in size there was!
That was a proper football ground smell Eve now its cups of coffee, blokes with pictures on their arms, more different haircuts than the women and prats getting down on one knee to find their future ex wife !!!
