Rushden and Diamonds was an amalgamation of Northamptonshire clubs Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds. (Come on you. Irthlings!). Max Griggs, owner of the Dr Martens boots company, was behind the merger. They played their Football League games at Nene Park, Irthlinborough's ground, because Rushden's ground could not be brought up to Football League standard.
They have re-formed and now play in Rushden

    O/T Statto question - teams we've played most/least

Anyone have (or know of) a list of the number of times we've faced other clubs in League/Cup matches historically?

There was a previous thread on this on Millersmad - seem to remember that it was Lincoln City that we had played the most times (haven't checked though). Surprisingly our neighbours from Sheffield were not in the top few, but I think that Donny was. Another surprise was that Swansea were high on the list too.

I would have thought Crewe and Wrexham were in there somewhere..... shows how long we spent in the lower leagues for years....

Noticed in the previous thread that the figures are slightly skewed by the old Third Division North days. The teams in that division remained fairly static as there was no automatic relegation and only one team got promoted... and usually didn't last long in Division 2.
We tended to play roughly the same teams season after season for a long period of time.
Obviously some like Workington, Gateshead, New Brighton, etc , are no longer in the Football League

If Cup games are included, we have played Lincoln City 96 times in competitive matches... Donny 86, Crewe 79, Wrexham 71...
    Hull City 73

We've played Spurs only once. In1972. Apart from Salford, we've played everyone else at least twice( I think).

Can't find the original thread. Maybe the Mods will be able to put it on for you
