Managers at AFC have to review their budget and decide how best to spend it. They will look at the relative importance of each position, and how much it would cost to fill it with the quality they'd like to see there. And consistently, going right back to at least Fergie (who played the likes of Rougvie, natural position central defender, and McMaster, natural position lady's blouse, at left back), they've taken the view that money could be better spent than upgrading to a "proper" left back. Why? I would assume a combination of two things:

    - good ones are hard to come by and relatively expensive
    - they think it's a position where having a guy who's not that great will do least damage. Not no damage, just less than a crap centre-back, or a useless striker for example.

I know we fans like to think we know better, but maybe when the guys who actually played and managed at a professional level are so
consistent, it's because there's some truth in what they think. Obviously whoever is managing Chelsea won't think the same way, but given our budget maybe the approach makes sense.

In an ideal world we'd have a better left-back than Considine, whose limitations are obvious enough. But he was iirc in seventh place in The Scotsman's list of the best full backs in the SPL last season. In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king, and in the land of the SPL left-back Considine qualifies as more than decent.

We can all disagree of course, but all the evidence suggests Deek doesn't. Having signed a very good left-back he then decided that a player of his quality could contribute more in midfield. Left back isn't where he wants to dedicate too much of his limited resources.

Whether we like it or lump it, we are stuck with Conso for the foreseeable.

I would too. Pinging balls in behind him and attacking him with pace will work a lot of the time

I understand the point but the stats suggest they either don't target his lack of pace, or, they do and it doesn't work as well as some folk on here seem to believe.

Having spoken to two other Premiership managers, both told me that Ash Taylor was the defender they targeted. We have incremental improved that position with Kari replacing Ash. So perhaps said managers will now change tact and set their sights on AC.

Whilst I agree with RST etc above about our ambitions. It will realistically only ever be with incremental improvements via opportunistic signings / promotion from within.

Taking such a black and white view on Andys credentials seems as harsh as some of the comments about Rooney IMHO. I'm not blind to their respective weaknesses but I appreciate that, in our domestic game at least, that they are very valuable assets. Could we sigh better on our budget? Possibly, but it won't be easy.

Its not me wanting to have a go at AC its just what I would do if I was an opposing manger. Hes not fast on the turn and hes not fast in general and does not have Hayes to help him

Is Stewart going to put in the defensive work Hayes did? I hope so but it remains to be seen. If not Considine could be a sitting duck against a rapid right sided winger

Its only really against Celtic in Scottish games that he struggles. Not that many other teams in our league have speedy skillfull right wingers that can make him look poor.

It wouldn't be Stewart that he will get support from. He tends to play on the right from what I have seen. It would need to be GMS.

Liam Boyce: Burton Albion striker to miss "most of season" with knee injury

One possible summer signing won't be playing for anyone soon.

after last nights debacle it is clear that stockley is useless, maynard might need time (not sure about him) and Miles Storey is not goijg to get a chance. Moult is a must sign.....
Cmon Deek you know its the right thing to do

    A good quality no.9 is a must.
After that, if any budget left, then a left centre half and left back
But if only one player is to come in, let it be a good no.9

We can try and offload one or two (Storey & Stockley) to create room for a left centre half and left back.
Or here's a thing....give Harvie a go at left back on Sunday?

Amazing how many people have told me I'm wrong about Considine are now calling for a left back. It's a must fill position.
